PFA reminds players to maintain distance when celebrating goals

The Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) has reminded players to embrace a sensible approach to celebrating goals amid the COVID-19 crisis and refrain from hugging or getting too close to each other, The Times newspaper reported.

Four Premier League games and over 50 games in the English Football League - which governs the three divisions below the top flight - have been postponed this season with some FA Cup ties this weekend in doubt.

“We’ve sent a message to all our members saying, ‘you have done a great job, you’ve kept the game going and you deserve a lot of credit, but it’s important you keep to the protocols,” PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor told The Times.

“Always abide by what you’re being told by doctors and medical staff with regard to the protocols about keeping your distance and the hygiene that’s required.

“I understand with the celebration of a goal it’s difficult to just put the ball in the back of the net and act as though nothing has happened.

“It’s that adrenaline rush... that’s what the game is all about, but that’s part and parcel of the process, so they’ll be reminded.”

Declan Kidney, the director of rugby of London Irish, said players may resort to creative, choreographed celebrations after Premiership Rugby introduced similar protocols to combat the virus.

“You could see some ridiculous celebrations, but if they’re safer, I’d prefer to see ridiculous and safe,” Kidney said.

Several soccer players have also breached COVID-19 guidelines by attending events on New Year’s Eve, including Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic who was rebuked by manager Scott Parker.

“He understands he’s made a mistake,” Parker said. “It was irresponsible. It’s not acceptable. We’ve dealt with that as a club internally.”

But Taylor said players “are human beings and this happens”, adding that was the reason for the PFA’s reminder on protocols.

Referee development is a long-term investment in India: AIFF Referees Director

All India Football Federation’s Referees Director Ravishankar Jayaraman feels the standard of officials in the country has improved over the years and will get better in the long run with more exposure and experience.

Jayaraman’s comments came amid criticism by a few coaches of poor refereeing in some matches of the ongoing Indian Super League in Goa.

“There has definitely been an improvement but it cannot be overnight. It is a gradual process. We have to think long-term,” said Jayaraman, who chaired an ‘Open Communication Forum’ organised by Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) recently.

“It is a long-term investment we are doing into a human being. With new development methods now coming to us, I hope we get more top-quality referees sooner, who can not only go and officiate in ISL early in their career but aim to be AFC and FIFA panelists as well,” he added.

The forum was attended by ISL club coaches and officials from the referees department of the AIFF.

Jayaraman said direct feedback from ISL coaches has helped team officials and match officials communicate better.

“We are having better matches since December last week onwards. In football, you are bound to react but the coaches understood that referees are not against anyone.””Sometimes there are incidents which might not be highlighted on TV but one with a technical eye can catch them. Usually, key decisions in a match like a goal or an offside don’t go wrong.

“But when it happens, we also do not appreciate key incidents getting wrong. Our responsibility is to try and help them realise mistakes with the tools we have,” he said.

He said plans were afoot for an exchange programme, wherein Indian referees would officiate a few games in England’s League One and League Two in addition to Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) representatives assessing games and conducting regular workshops in India during the ISL season but they had to be deferred due to the pandemic.

“We are taking advantage of PGMOL’s guidance. In every game we have a Referee Assessor but PGMOL has this mechanism of following a referee’s performance throughout the year. We are trying to integrate that into our system as well,” said Jayaraman.

PGMOL is the body which provides officials for all games played in the Premier League, English Football League (EFL) and Football Association (FA) competitions.

Jayaraman pointed out that a major hindrance in referee development in India from the grassroots level is financial insecurity.

“To become a referee in India, you start at the age of 25-26 and work your way up to becoming a set panelist by the age of 40-41, that is when you get an opportunity to officiate in the top tier in ISL and maybe AFC competitions as well.”

Leicester's Vardy, Maddison expected to miss FA Cup tie at Stoke

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy and playmaker James Maddison are likely to be rested for Saturday’s FA Cup clash at Stoke City to allow them to fully recover from injuries, manager Brendan Rodgers has said.

Vardy, Leicester’s top scorer this season with 13 goals in all competitions, is battling a niggling hip problem, while Maddison, who has scored six goals and provided six assists, is carrying a knee injury. Both players did not train this week.

“Our two question marks will be with Vardy and Maddison,” Rodgers told reporters. “Both of those players have done really well to get through these last number of games because they’ve been carrying some injuries.”

“This may be an opportunity for us to let them recover and then be ready after the weekend ... Because of the closeness of the games, they haven’t been able to have the recovery period.

“We’re having to look at where we can do that, for the benefit of the short and the longer term. So this is probably going to be the weekend where they miss out.”

Rodgers said defender Ricardo Pereira will miss the game as he continues to recover from a groin issue, while new recruit Cengiz Under will need to be assessed after picking up an ankle injury.

Chelsea boss Lampard must not panic amid poor run, says Grant

Former Chelsea manager Avram Grant has backed under-fire current boss Frank Lampard to turn the Premier League club’s fortunes around after a turbulent start to the season.

A huge outlay in the close season, including the signings of German playmaker Kai Havertz and striker Timo Werner raised expectations on Chelsea, who finished fourth in Lampard’s first season in charge in 2019-20.

The London club were tipped as title contenders following a strong start to the current campaign but four defeats in six Premier League games have left them in ninth spot and raised the pressure on Lampard.

“You need to be strong when things are not going well, when things are going well everyone is a genius and knows what to do,” Grant, who was sacked just days after guiding Chelsea to the Champions League final in 2008, said in an Instagram post.

“But in a situation like this you need to look for solutions and show a lot of character. What I can say to Frank and the others at the club is be patient, do whatever is necessary... Don’t lose your fighting spirit at the highest level.

“Don’t lose what you have here (points at head) you need to look for solutions. If you do that then everything will be okay because the quality is there.”

Chelsea host League Two (third-tier) side Morecambe in the FA Cup third round on Sunday.

Aston Villa reports 'significant' virus outbreak

Aston Villa reported a “significant” coronavirus outbreak and closed its training ground on Thursday, putting in jeopardy its scheduled FA Cup home game against Liverpool.

The Premier League club canceled first-team training ahead of Friday’s match. Villa is also scheduled to host Tottenham in a league game next Wednesday.

“The Football Association and Aston Villa are working closely together to try to ensure that the club’s third round proper fixture with Liverpool can go ahead as planned at Villa Park tomorrow evening,” the club said Thursday evening.

“Final confirmation will be made (Friday) pending the results of additional COVID-19 testing,” it added.

The club said “ a large number ” of players and staff returned positive tests following routine testing on Monday, and they “immediately went into isolation.”

“A second round of testing was carried out immediately and produced more positive results today,” Villa said earlier Thursday.

Earlier, Southampton’s third-round FA Cup game against Shrewsbury scheduled for Saturday at St. Mary’s Stadium was called off after the third-division team reported a coronavirus outbreak.

The League One club said “several members” of its squad and staff tested positive. It wasn’t immediately clear if already tight schedules will allow the game to be played at a later date.

“Shrewsbury Town informed us that there have been a significant number of positive COVID-19 cases at the club, such that they did not have a sufficient amount of fit, non-isolating players who would be able to play in the fixture,” the FA said.

The FA asked for more information regarding Shrewsbury’s “ability to fulfill the fixture,” and said its Professional Game Board will meet early next week “to make a decision as to what will happen with the fixture.”

Elite sports have continued even as Britain faces a more contagious variant of the coronavirus. A third national lockdown that started Tuesday requires everyone in England to stay at home for at least the next six weeks, with limited exceptions.

“I fear football might succumb in the next few weeks,” England great and TV pundit Gary Lineker said Thursday on Twitter.

Also, two Women’s Super League games scheduled for Saturday were postponed Thursday.

The Manchester City women’s match against West Ham was called off after City reported “four positive COVID-19 cases and a number of other mitigating factors.”

Arsenal’s women’s team said one player tested positive this week, resulting in self-isolation for several players and the postponement of its game against Aston Villa.

City’s men’s team has also been navigating through an outbreak.

United States goalkeeper Zack Steffen again stepped in for Ederson — out after contracting the coronavirus — to start in City’s 2-0 win over Manchester United in the League Cup on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, reserve goalkeeper Scott Carson and midfielder Cole Palmer were added to the positive list.

City had six players missing for Sunday’s 3-1 win at Chelsea in the Premier League because they had contracted COVID-19 — Ederson, defenders Kyle Walker and Eric Garcia, midfielder Tommy Doyle, and forwards Gabriel Jesus and Ferran Torres.

Three Premier League games were postponed last week following an increased number of positive tests at City and Fulham.

On Saturday, second-division club Derby expects that manager Wayne Rooney and his entire first-team squad will miss the FA Cup match against non-league Chorley following an outbreak.

Derby will instead send a group of under-23 and under-18 players to play in the third-round game, Derby chief executive Stephen Pearce said Wednesday. He said nine players and staff within the first-team bubble had tested positive.

Teenage winger Amad Diallo completes move to Man United

Manchester United completed the signing of teenager Amad Diallo from Atalanta on Thursday, with the winger signing a contract until 2025 with the option of a further year. United reached an agreement with the Serie A club for the 18-year-old Diallo on Oct. 5, subject to a medical, work permit and personal terms.

United confirmed those steps have been completed and an application has been made for a visa, which once issued will allow the Ivory Coast native to travel to Manchester and link up with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

“After waiting since the summer, it is finally a dream come true to complete my move to Manchester United,” Diallo said. “This is a really exciting squad with so many great players, I can promise that I will work hard every day to learn from them and give everything to develop my game. The coaches have been fantastic since I signed, we have been in touch regularly and they have already given me a lot of great advice.”

Diallo made five appearances for Atalanta — including two this season — and scored one goal, on his debut against Udinese in October 2019.

“I have had time to prepare for this move, both physically and mentally, and I have worked really hard to be ready to make the step up to this amazing club,” Diallo added.

British media reported that United will pay an initial fee of 21 million euros ($19 million), with an additional 20 million euros ($18 million) possible in add-ons.

“As a club, we have followed Amad for a number of years and, having watched him myself, I believe he is one of the most exciting young prospects in the game,” Solskjaer said. “Manchester United has such a proud history of developing young players and everything is in place to enable Amad to reach his potential here.

“It will take time for him to adapt, but his speed, vision and fantastic dribbling ability will stand him in good stead to make the transition.”

Took great effort from stakeholders to organise I-League in times of COVID-19: AIFF...

The AIFF general secretary Kushal Das on Thursday said it took a great effort from all stakeholders to set the ball rolling for the I-League in these unprecedented times.

“There are unprecedented times and the fact that we are able to bring football back is a great effort from all stakeholders involved,” Das told a virtual press conference ahead of the League which begins on January 9 in Kolkata.

“We need to pat ourselves on the back to start a football league in India ahead of any other federation. I am looking forward to an entertaining and competitive league,” he added.

Das said the qualifiers for the I-League in October 2020 was the first sporting event to be organised in India during the COVID-19 pandemic and with the tournament slated to get underway, the league committee has ensured that football stays undisturbed by the pandemic.

A total of 11 teams including three debutants, will fight for the title over 160 matches in the 2020-21 I-League. The 11 teams have been kept in two separate hotels in Kolkata with the match officials in another hotel.

Three RT-PCR tests were done before the check-in by the players and match officials followed by a seven-day quarantine. During the seven days, two more tests were conducted, and only after all the five negative COVID tests, could the players and officials train.

“The health of players and officials are of paramount importance to us. We cannot take any risk,” Das said.

Responding to a question, the AIFF general secretary also said the I-League would never lose its relevance, adding things were on the right track to structure Indian football.

“The I-League will never lose its relevance. We are on a right track to structure Indian football and the I-League has given a platform to a lot of young Indian talent. Indian football is on the rise and with that, the standard of the League will also rise,” he added.

Sunando Dhar, CEO, AIFF League, said, a lot of planning was done to make the I-League qualifiers a success.

“A lot of planning was done to make the I-League Qualifiers in 2020 a success and without a glitch. We had to adapt to different ground realities and behind the camera, there was a lot of work done. The organisation of the qualifiers gave us more confidence to organise the I-League. It is one of the biggest challenges we as a league will ever face,” he added.

Dhar also said the league provided an opportunity for young talent across the country, adding “the I-League has a nationwide impact on football in India.

“There are clubs from different parts of the nation and that gives us a unique opportunity for young talent in that area a chance to aspire. It gives them a platform to showcase talent.

“With new teams coming in, we have exciting times on our hands,” he added.

The champions of the I-League will earn a spot in the AFC Cup group stages. The tournament begins with a match between Sudeva Delhi FC and Mohammedan SC on January 9 at 2 PM.

Aston Villa reports 'significant' virus outbreak

Aston Villa reported a “significant” coronavirus outbreak and closed its training ground on Thursday, a day before a scheduled FA Cup home game against Liverpool.

The Premier League club cancelled first-team training ahead of the match.

“Discussions are ongoing between medical representatives of the club, the Football Association and the Premier League,” Aston Villa said in a statement.

The club said “a large number” of players and staff returned positive tests following routine testing on Monday, and they “immediately went into isolation.”

Liverpool unlikely to sign centre back in January, says Klopp

Liverpool are unlikely to sign a central defender in January as cover amid an injury crisis at the Premier League club, with the COVID-19 pandemic also not making it a financially viable option, manager Juergen Klopp said on Thursday.

Liverpool’s three main centre backs Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are all sidelined with injuries and Klopp was forced to play midfielders Fabinho and Jordan Henderson in defence in Monday’s 1-0 loss at Southampton.

However, the German coach said a short-term solution would not help and he would look within the squad for options.

“I can’t say definitely that we won’t bring someone in, just not likely because of the situation in the world,” Klopp told reporters ahead of Friday’s FA Cup third round tie at Aston Villa.

“It’s a tough for one for all people and football clubs. Some clubs don’t have financial problems but this club will always be very responsible with the things we do.

“If the world was in a normal place and then three senior centre backs got injured, is that a situation when you would do something? Yes, usually. But it’s not... Not the best moment for the whole planet so why would it be for a football club?”

League leaders Liverpool have dropped seven points in their last three games with second-placed Manchester United level on points with a game in hand.

Liverpool welcome United to Anfield on Jan. 17 but Klopp said he will not look to rotate too much against Villa.

“It’s important, the FA Cup,” he said. “We didn’t go far so far. Not blessed with sensational draws, now Villa is tough too.

“We need to find a balance of a team we haven’t changed too much, we need some fresh legs. The opponent is too strong for us (to make many changes). We have eight days between this and Manchester United.”

Klopp said midfielder Naby Keita would not be fit in time to face Villa while forward Diogo Jota is still wearing a knee brace and is “weeks away” from returning to training.

Keane says Fernandes must do more in big games for Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes’ ability to inspire the team has drawn comparisons to talismanic former player Eric Cantona but ex-captain Roy Keane believes the Portuguese must do more in big games following their League Cup exit on Wednesday.

United were beaten 2-0 by Manchester City, who reached their fourth straight final thanks to second-half goals from defender John Stones and Fernandinho, while Fernandes had a quiet game.

Fernandes made a big impression after joining from Sporting Lisbon last year, with 27 goals and 17 assists overall, and his impact has been likened by former United players to that of Cantona who helped end their 26-year wait for a league title in 1993.

“It’s not easy winning football trophies. Fernandes has had praise for the last few months and people have been comparing him to Cantona. He didn’t really do much tonight,” Keane told Sky Sports on Wednesday.

“The top players turn up in the big occasions. And that’s what the Cantonas used to do – they get their hands on trophies. That’s where this team are a little bit short.”

United have now lost at the semi-final stage in their last four Cup campaigns and Keane said that they needed fresh blood to take the next step.

“They probably need one or two more players to come into this squad, no doubt, and they need the mentality and confidence of winning a semi-final to get them over the line,” he added.

“You then get momentum and they just didn’t quite have it (against City).”

Manchester City outclass United in Manchester derby to reach League Cup final

Manchester City reached their fourth straight League Cup final as second-half goals from John Stones and Fernandinho gave Pep Guardiola’s side a 2-0 win over Manchester United in Wednesday’s semi-final at Old Trafford.

City will meet Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley in the April 25 final as they seek their fourth League Cup triumph in a row.

In a frantic opening to the game, both teams had efforts ruled out for offside with Stones turning the ball into his own net but being saved by the flag and Ilkay Gundogan converting a low ball in from Phil Foden but, again, the attempt was rightly ruled out.

Kevin De Bruyne struck the post with a thundering drive from outside the box before Foden also put the ball in the net for City but the visitors were foiled by offside once again.

It was an open and entertaining game with City looking sharper but United competitive as they sought revenge for last year’s defeat by their neighbours at the same stage of the competition.

City went ahead five minutes after the break when Foden whipped in a free kick from the left through a crowded box and defender Stones bundled a cross home at the back post, the ball going in off his thigh.

United keeper Dean Henderson produced a brilliant save to tip over a strike from Riyad Mahrez, after the Algerian had burst forward from the halfway line.

Fernandinho made sure of the win seven minutes from time with a stunning volley as he pounced on a headed clearance from Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

United have now lost at the semi-final stage in their last four Cup campaigns, leaving manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still searching for his first final since taking over at the club.

“We’re getting closer. This is a much better version of United than a year ago in those semis,” said the Norwegian.

“It’s not psychological, sometimes you meet good teams in the semis. City are probably the best team in England at the moment,” he added.

City entered the field in number eight shirts in tribute to former player Colin Bell who died on Tuesday and Guardiola said they had honoured his memory.

“It’s for Colin Bell and his family. He helped to build something special for this club. It’s an incredible victory for us to beat United away and it was for him absolutely,” he said.

“The team is ready and it was an outstanding performance. We dipped a little bit in the second half, we were tired...but when the team has this mentality they can do something incredible. It’s not the Champions League but four times in a row to reach the final - I’m so impressed,” he said.

PSG draws in Pochettino's first game; leader Lyon wins 3-2

Mauricio Pochettino’s first game in charge of Paris Saint-Germain ended in a tame 1-1 draw at Saint-Etienne on Wednesday as leader Lyon moved three points clear by beating Lens 3-2 at home.

Lyon made it 15 games unbeaten with Memphis Depay scoring twice, but PSG still jumped up to second place on goal difference because Lille lost 2-1 at home to Angers.

“I am disappointed. We are PSG and we wanted to win,” said Pochettino, who replaced Thomas Tuchel after he was fired late last month. “This is not the result that we wanted.”

Pochettino’s tenure got off to a bad start when veteran winger Romain Hamouma put Saint-Etienne ahead in the 19th minute, after PSG midfielder Idrissa Gueye lost the ball near the penalty area.

It was the 100th league goal Hamouma has been involved in, with 57 goals and 43 assists.

Striker Moise Kean equalized soon after when he was teed up by midfielder Marco Verratti.

Kean then shot over the bar with 20 minutes left, just moments after Saint-Etienne striker Denis Bouanga headed against the woodwork.

Lyon totally dominated the first half against Lens and Depay made the breakthrough in the 39th, when he latched onto a defense-splitting pass from midfielder Lucas Paqueta and finished confidently.

It took Lyon less than one minute to double its lead following the break, when a cross from right back Leo Dubois led to a clumsy own goal from defender Steven Fortes.

Maxwell Cornet was then fouled in the box when put clean through by the impressive Paqueta, and Depay converted his sixth penalty of the campaign from a short run up in the 52nd.

Florian Sotoca pulled a fine goal back with a curler into the top right corner, and Cheick Doucoure ensured a nervy finish with a late second goal for Lens.

“Everyone thought it was going to be an easy win for us, but I was worried this would be a difficult game,” Lyon coach Rudi Garcia said. “But our unbeaten run continues and I congratulate the players for that.”

In northern France, Lille was 2-0 down after 11 minutes against Angers, with midfielder Romain Thomas grabbing both, before veteran Turkey striker Burak Yilmaz pulled one back in the 41st.

MARSEILLE WINS

Marseille may now think twice about sending winger Nemanja Radonjic out on loan as planned.

He made the most of a rare start when he headed in Florian Thauvin’s cross close to halftime.

Montpellier is one of the league’s best away sides and midfielder Florent Mollet made it 1-1.

But Marseille’s substitutes made the difference as playmaker Dimitri Payet — surprisingly left on the bench — and Valere Germain netted in the last 10 minutes.

Although Marseille is in fifth place, it has played two games fewer than the top four sides.

DOMENECH’S RETURN

Raymond Domenech’s first match in charge of Nantes ended in a 0-0 draw at home to fourth-place Rennes.

Domenech is coaching again after a decade away.

His France tenure ended with the entire playing squad going on a training ground strike at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa in protest at teammate Nicolas Anelka being sent home.

OTHER MATCHES

Aleksandr Golovin came off the bench and scored straight away as sixth-place Monaco won 5-2 at struggling Lorient.

The skilful Russia midfielder, who has been out since September with a thigh injury, struck midway through the second half with a fine curling shot from outside the penalty area following a corner.

Striker Ludovic Ajorque netted twice in Strasbourg’s 5-0 win against last-place Nimes.

Also, it was: Brest 2, Nice 0; Metz 0, Bordeaux 0, and Reims 0, Dijon 0.

Juventus win 3-1 at Milan to end Rossoneri's unbeaten run

AC Milan’s 27-game unbeaten run in Serie A ended Wednesday with a 3-1 loss to Juventus that gives the defending champion renewed hope of a 10th straight title.

Federico Chiesa scored twice for Juventus with American Weston McKennie adding the third goal as Milan lost in the league for the first time since March, a streak dating back to last season.

“The lads are disappointed but in a way it is good for us to experience the bitter taste of defeat, because it’s been a while,” Milan coach Stefano Pioli said. “I gave them a pat on the back, because when you give your all there shouldn’t be any regrets.”

Davide Calabria had equalized shortly before halftime for Milan, which had been the last unbeaten team in any of Europe’s top five leagues.

Milan still maintained its league lead, a point above city rival Inter Milan, which lost 2-1 at Sampdoria. Juventus moved into fourth, seven points behind Milan with a game in hand. A loss for Juventus would have stretched Milan’s lead to 13 points and left the Turin club’s nine-year stranglehold on the title hanging by a thread.

“It was important to win tonight for ourselves,” said Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo, who played for Milan for 10 seasons. “We didn’t look at the results of the others, we take it game by game and then we’ll see where we are in a few months.

“We had a good game, it was important to play with this spirit, control the game and try to win.”

Both Milan and Juventus had players ruled out with the coronavirus while the home side was also missing several through injury, including key forward Zlatan Ibrahimović.

“Seven players out is a lot for anyone,” Pioli said. “We knew that if there was a team that we could find ourselves in difficulty against, it was Juve. It’s a team that has won nine straight titles, has great players and we held our own.”

Chiesa hit the post before opening the scoring in the 18th minute, stroking Paulo Dybala’s backheeled flick into the bottom left corner following a swift one-two with the Argentine.

Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny was forced into a number of saves before Milan leveled four minutes before the break with a rapid counterattack that ended with Rafael Leão rolling the ball across for Calabria to place into the top right corner.

Chiesa restored Juve’s lead in the 62nd minute but went off seconds later with an injury. His replacement, McKennie, scored in the 76th from close range after good work from Dejan Kulusevski down the right flank.

STREAK ENDED

Both of Sampdoria’s goals were scored by former Inter players to end Inter’s eight-match winning streak.

Antonio Candreva put Sampdoria ahead with a penalty before Keita Baldé Diao finished off a well-worked counterattack before the break.

Stefan de Vrij pulled one back for Inter with a header in the 65th but the visitors’ sorely lacked a fully fit Romelu Lukaku, who came on only for the final half hour as he returns from injury.

Alexis Sanchez had a penalty saved early on by Sampdoria goalkeeper Emil Audero, after which Ashley Young knocked the rebound off the post.

Third-place Roma moved within three points of Inter with a 3-1 win at last-place Crotone before hosting the Nerazzurri on Sunday.

Inter’s only other league loss this season came in mid-October, when it was defeated 2-1 in the Milan derby.

OTHER MATCHES

Sassuolo beat relegation-threatened Genoa 2-1 with a late header from Gianluca Raspadori to move into fourth, holding on to the final Champions League spot.

Atalanta remained one point further back after defeating Parma 3-0 with goals from Luis Muriel, Duvan Zapata and Robin Gosens to move level on points with Napoli, which lost 2-1 at home to promoted Spezia.

Spezia fought back from a goal down and Tommaso Pobega scored the winner despite his side having been reduced to 10 men following a second yellow card for defender Ardian Ismajli.

Also, Lazio defeated Fiorentina 2-1 with goals from Felipe Caicedo and Ciro Immobile.

Hellas Verona drew 1-1 at Torino; Filippo Inzaghi’s promoted Benevento squad won 2-1 at Cagliari; and Bologna drew 2-2 with Udinese.

Messi nets 2 in Barcelona win at Bilbao; Atlético upset in Copa

Lionel Messi scored two goals to lead Barcelona to a 3-2 win at Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish league, while Atlético Madrid was ousted from the Copa del Rey by a third-tier side on Wednesday.

Teenager Pedro “Pedri” González canceled out Iñaki William’s opener for Bilbao before Messi added two goals to secure an away win for Barcelona that lifted it into third place.

Atlético leads the league but lost 1-0 at third-tier Cornellà in the Copa del Rey’s round of 32 — a result that means Diego Simeone’s side can focus even more on the La Liga title race.

ATLÉTICO HUMBLED

It’s the second year in a row that Atlético lost to a third-tier team in the cup competition, after a 2-1 defeat to Cultural Leonesa.

“Our rivals have played better,” Atlético coach Diego Simeone said. “We had some good attacking moves, but overall our rival (Cornellà) always played better. They took advantage of the set piece and got their goal. It was even more uphill after the sending off. Now we have to find solutions.”

Atlético is not alone in getting caught off-guard. Third-tier sides also ousted topflight teams Celta Vigo and Getafe on Tuesday.

But Atlético has been the biggest victim of the change in format of the Copa del Rey two seasons ago. Before last season, each round was played over two legs, giving bigger clubs chances to come back at home if they slipped up away. Now, all rounds except for the semifinals are played in one leg at the lower-seeded side.

Still, a team like Atlético had no business losing at Cornellà, a club based in a working-class neighbors on the outskirts of Barcelona.

Atlético is the front-runner to win the league title. It has only lost once in 15 rounds in the Spanish league and is set to face Chelsea in the Champions League’s round of 16 in February.

Cornellà, meanwhile, has had a ho-hum season in its group in the third tier, with three wins, two draws and four losses leaving it in seventh place.

Even before the visitors lost defender Ricardo Sánchez to a second booking in the 65th minute, they had not proven to be superior.

Cornellà defender Adrian Jiménez scored the game’s only goal in the eighth minute from a cross by Agus Medina to the near post.

Atlético was never comfortable on Cornellà’s artificial turf. The closest it came to equalizing was Saúl Ñíguez’s shot off the woodwork midway through the first half.

Atlético lost center back José Giménez after he injured his left ankle early on. João Félix also left the match in the second half after he hurt an ankle.

Cornellà coach Guillermo Fernández told Simeone he “was sorry” for the result.

“I said what I felt,” Fernández said after the match. “For these clubs, which are under so much pressure, these matches are very uncomfortable. For us today is a special day. I said before the match we would need to play an exceptional match, and that is what we did -- and we had that bit of luck we needed.”

PEDRI & MESSI

Williams gave Marcelino García Toral a perfect start to his debut match as Bilbao’s new coach in the third minute. The forward broke free down the left flank, cut back inside Clement Lenglet, and drilled a low shot under goalkeeper Marc Andre ter Stegen.

But once Messi and Pedri started to click, Barcelona dominated the game except for a lone goal by Iker Munian in the 90th minute after a poor pass by Messi.

Pedri equalized in the 14th when he headed in a ball knocked back by Frenkie de Jong after Messi had met his long run into the area with a precise lob from distance.

The 18-year-old Pedri then turned playmaker when he used a no-look pass by rolling the ball backwards to set up Messi in the 38th.

Messi made it 3-1 in the 62nd by firing a pass from Antoine Griezmann off the underside of the bar and into the net.

Messi, who also hit the woodwork twice, tarnished his otherwise brilliant game when his poor pass was picked off by Bilbao near the area, allowing Muniain to score.

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman praised his team and credited the strong play of Pedri and De Jong in midfield.

“It is always important to have good players, above all in the midfield; that is where you can dictate the game,” Koeman said. “With players like Frenkie, (Sergio) Busquets, Pedri and Leo (Messi) we always had an extra man and they dictated the game. Pedri is one of those players. I am not surprised that is playing at a great level compared to the rest.”

Carles Cuadrat shown door by Bengaluru FC

Bengaluru FC head coach Carles Cuadrat was on Wednesday shown the door after a string of poor shows by the club in the ongoing Indian Super League. The former champions had seen three losses on the trot with the last one being against Mumbai City FC on Tuesday and club director Parth Jindal made it known that Cuadrat was not sticking to the “team philosophy” this season.

With three wins and equal numbers of draws and losses, Bengaluru FC are currently outside the top four in the ISL table as they slipped down to fifth with 12 points, 10 points adrift of current top position holder Mumbai City FC.

In a statement, the club, however, said that Cuadrat leaving Bengaluru FC was a “mutual decision”. “After deep deliberation with the management, we feel the club needs to head in a new direction – one where the ethos and philosophy of Bengaluru FC begins reflecting again,” Jindal said in the statement.

“While we enjoyed success with Carles in the past, we felt there was a departure from the philosophy that we hold true this season, which prompted us to arrive at this decision.”

Cuadrat, who was in his fifth season with the club (two as an assistant to Albert Roca before he took charge as head coach), will be replaced by Naushad Moosa, who will step in as interim head coach with immediate effect. Moosa’s first assignment will be the game against SC East Bengal on Saturday at Margao.

Under Cuadrat, Bengaluru FC became the first and only team in ISL history to top the table and win the title in the same season. The Blues, under the Spaniard, also hold the record of most consecutive wins (six), unbeaten streak (11 games) and clean sheets (11).

“I greatly appreciate the club for giving me the opportunity to be head coach. It has been a relationship where I have been treated really well and a club that I will always have fond memories of. I wish the club all the luck through the season and beyond,” Cuadrat said.

Jindal said in the five years that Cuadrat spent with the club, he has gone through all the ups and downs experienced by it. “He was around when we lost the AFC Cup final and then the ISL final, before leading us to the ISL title on that night in Mumbai,” said Jindal.

“Naushad Moosa has been with the club for four seasons and we are confident he will get the team to play the kind of football that we have based our success on. We will be bringing someone as coach who can further the philosophy and style of this club.”

Maintenance of bio-secure bubble will be critical during I-League: CEO

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is keeping no stone unturned to ensure a smooth and safe conduct of the I-League starting here on Saturday, in view of the COVID-19 pandemic though the caseload in the country has gone down considerably in the past few days.

The AIFF has gained experience regarding the maintenance of bio-secure bubble during the I-League Qualifiers in October last though it was on a much smaller scale with just five teams competing.

The 11-team I-League will played behind closed doors in four venues in Kolkata and Kalyani. Debutants Sudeva FC will take on newly-promoted Mohammedan Sporting at the Salt Lake Stadium while Punjab FC face Aizawl FC and Gokulam Kerala FC go up against Chennai City FC at Kalyani Municipal Stadium in other two matches of the day.

“With the number of teams going up from five (during the Qualifiers) to 11 and the number of days from 25 to 100, the maintenance of the bio-bubble and co-ordination between the teams and organizers will be critical,” League CEO Sunando Dhar said.

“Cooperation from the participating sides is vital to maintain the bio-bubble and in order to ensure a successful event, all parties have to come together in a team effort and move forward together,” he added.

The 11 teams have been put up in two 5-star hotels in Kolkata. Punjab FC, Indian Arrows, Chennai City FC, TRAU FC and Churchill Brothers FC are in one hotel, while Real Kashmir FC, Mohammedan SC, Gokulam Kerala FC, Aizawl FC, Sudeva Delhi FC and Neroca FC are housed in the second.

The teams began checking-in to their respective hotels and entering the bio-secure bubble from December 26 onwards, after which they immediately began their period of seven days of mandatory quarantine. Prior to their check-in, each member of all the teams has to have three successive negative COVID-19 RT-PCR tests, the samples of which have to be taken ten, six and two days prior to them entering the bubble.

After checking in, the teams will be tested on the second and fifth day, followed by tests every 5-6 days and regular monitoring of body vitals. Each team has been allocated 20 rooms in the hotel, with the addition of a separate medical/physio room for every side. For their quarantine, a comprehensive list of dos-and-don’ts has been given to each team as well.

The housekeeping staff attending to the rooms will also be a part of the same bio-bubble and will be tested on a regular basis every 3-4 days. Other support staff such as drivers, security personnel and hotel staff will also be tested regularly.

“Safety of all players and officials is our top-most priority and there can never be any compromises in that regard,” Dhar said.

In case of a positive test result for any team member, he or she will have to undergo a 17-day period of quarantine – either in the same hotel on a different floor, or in an outside facility.

In order to re-join the bubble, the person has to have two successive negative RT-PCR tests. However, if the individual was in isolation outside the hotel, he/she needs to undergo a compulsory 5-day quarantine in the hotel upon check-in for him/her to rejoin his team.
