Vertonghen featured over 300 times for Tottenham during an eight-year stint in the Premier League.

The Belgian ace recently joined talkSPORT to bid his own special farewell to everyone associated with the north London club.

“I will miss them,” Vertonghen told White and Sawyer. “I had a great time at Spurs and made lots of friends, and learned lots of things – perhaps even more off the pitch than on the pitch from my family at Spurs, and I will miss everyone.

“It’s been a great ride and could have maybe lasted longer, but it’s time for it to end.”

Vertonghen struggled for game time after Jose Mourinho succeeded Mauricio Pochettino as head coach in November 2019, but he still spoke highly of the defender throughout his reign.

That was highlighted when he praised the Vertoghen’s ‘character’ after he agreed to sign a short-term contract extension to see out the remainder of the campaign amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Benfica finished second in the Primeira Liga in 2019/20, and will enter next term’s Champions League at the third qualifying round stage.
