Farmers’ league? Kylian Mbappe hits back at Ligue 1 jibes as PSG and Lyon ensure Champions League semi-finals will have no English, Spanish or Italian clubs

Kylian Mbappe has hit back at criticism over the quality of Ligue 1 as two French clubs will play in the Champions League semi-finals and no English, Spanish or Italian sides will.

Lyon upset the odds by securing a 3-1 win over Man City, while Paris Saint-Germain scored two late goals to knock out Atalanta in a dramatic round of quarter-finals.

Now, Lyon will take on Bayern Munich, while Paris Saint-Germain face RB Leipzig in the last four of the competition.

Ligue 1 has been dubbed the ‘Farmers’ League’ by several football fans for years due to its perceived lack of quality and with PSG winning seven successive top-flight titles by large margins.

But with two French clubs participating in this year’s Champions League semi-finals, PSG star Mbappe could not resist a sly jibe.

He tweeted ‘FARMERS LEAGUE’ with a clown face emoji, while also congratulating Lyon for their quarter-final success over City.

Pep Guardiola’s men were huge favourites to progress to the last four of the Champions League against a Lyon side who had edged past Juventus in the previous round.

Despite dominating large spells of the game, Lyon capitalised on lacklustre defending from City with goals from Maxwel Cornet and Moussa Dembele (2).

Raheem Sterling could have brought the Citizens level in the 86th minute, but he somehow blasted over from close-range with an open goal at his mercy.

Kevin De Bruyne, who brought City level for just 10 minutes in the second-half, said: “The game was open, they didn’t really create except for the goals, but it’s not good enough, that’s it.”
