Simon Jordan has questioned why Gareth Bale is a professional footballer after the Welshman told Real Madrid he didn’t want to play in their Champions League clash vs Manchester City.
In the latest episode of the soap opera that is Bale’s career in Spain, the 31-year-old did not travel to the Etihad out of his own choice despite being fit to play.
It is understood Bale did not wish to suffer the humiliation of another match on the bench, where he has spent his time yawning and bottle flipping since the resumption of football.
Zidane has made it abundantly clear, for years, that Bale is not part of his plans moving forward, but Madrid’s inability to shift their highest-paid player has led to a bitter battle of morals.
Bale, who earns about £600,000-a-week, would sooner see out the remaining two years of his contract on the golf course before taking a pay cut elsewhere.
His refusal to play in Friday night’s match, which Madrid lost 2-1 to go crashing out of Europe, is sure to infuriate the Los Blancos faithful – as if they weren’t angry enough already.
Despite helping Madrid win several European Cups, the Wales international is public enemy number one in the Spanish capital due to his apparent lack of respect for the club.
And talkSPORT host Jordan believes the fans’ fury is fair enough.
“What’s the point, Gareth?” Jordan told talkSPORT. “If you don’t want to play, then why are you a professional footballer?
“You’ve got this incredible ability, you’re clearly a top-class player.
“I listened to him on a podcast being smart and disrespectful to the Real Madrid fans and talking about the idea that Real Madrid fans boo you if you don’t play well.
“I thought, ‘That’s really sensible, Gareth’.
“In previous times, he’s stood in front of a flag saying ‘Wales, golf, Madrid’.
“There is a real disconnect between the fans and Gareth because they don’t think he values the club in the way that he should, despite scoring phenomenal goals.
“They also think he’s injured way too much. They don’t like the fact he hasn’t embraced the language. And they don’t like the way he thinks he’s a golfer more than a footballer.”
