Kai Havertz to Chelsea all-but confirmed as Bayer Leverkusen boss admits Germany star will not return to training

Chelsea’s hopes of signing Kai Havertz this week have been handed a serious boost as Bayer Leverkusen admit they don’t expect him to train with the club again.

It is understood the Blues have agreed to sign the midfielder for an initial £72million, potentially rising to £90m with add-ons.

And Leverkusen boss Peter Bosz revealed on Monday it was now unlikely the 23-year-old would return to the club after the international break.

His comments come as Havertz joins up with the German national team.

“Unfortunately, our squad has not yet been determined,” Leverkusen boss Bosz said when queried about the state of his side.

“I don’t expect Kevin Volland and Kai Havertz to train with us again.

“It is possible that other players will also change. We definitely need to bring in players.”

Harry Redknapp insists 'nothing fazes' Frank Lampard and backs the Chelsea boss to excel after new transfers

Frank Lampard has been given cash to splash this summer and has already built an impressive new-look squad with the arrivals of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell for a combined £131.3m, plus Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr on free transfers.

But the boss is not stopping there, with the Blues legend now intent on sealing a deal for German wonderkid Havertz that would smash the club’s transfer record.

Latest reports from Germany claim the transfer is on the cusp of completion, after Havertz was absent as Leverkusen put the entire squad through their paces in a day of fitness tests ahead of the new Bundesliga season.

According to Bild, Havertz was present at the club on Friday and Saturday for coronavirus testing, which he needed to complete in order to play in Germany’s upcoming Nations League games against Spain and Switzerland.

However, Bild also claim he was a no-show on Sunday for the club’s annual fitness tests, which suggests he will be a Chelsea player sooner rather than later.
