Liverpool to get record £175m boost as Premier League clubs decide prize money cuts will not affect 2019/20 season

Liverpool will get a record £175million payout for winning the Premier League title, after an agreement to delay the cuts to prize money due to COVID-19.

Premier League clubs will receive their full prize money payouts this summer, after it was decided any reductions that will be made will not affect the 2019/20 season.

All 20 clubs have agreed that cuts to TV revenue, which could total £330m, will be spread out over future seasons instead.

They have also agreed to another advance of solidarity payments to EFL clubs, following the £125m paid in April that had been due this month, but stopped short of a bailout of the lower-league teams.

The decisions were confirmed at last week’s annual general meeting of Premier League clubs’ chief executives and chairmen.

It means that Liverpool will receive a record sum of about £175m in prize money and TV earnings from being crowned champions – which could have a huge impact on their summer transfer business.

According to analysis by the football finance expert Swiss Ramble, Liverpool’s prize money would have dropped by £21m if the rebate had been applied to last year’s earnings.

The Premier League usually announces its payments to clubs in the week after the end of the season, but they are still yet to do so.

According to The Times, the decision has been made to ‘delay the pain’ of the pandemic.

The allocation of TV money was changed last season – the first of a three-year TV deal cycle – so that it will be dished out according to where clubs finish in the Premier League table, rather than it being split equalling between all 20 teams.

In 2018/19, champions Manchester City and runners-up Liverpool both earned just over £150m, and they’re set to earn an increase of between 12 and 15 per cent for the 19/20 campaign.
