Yves Bissouma was shown a straight red card after a dangerous high foot left Newcastle defender Jamal Lewis in some discomfort on the deck.
The Brighton midfielder even earned comparisons to WWE legend Shawn Michaels after his attempted flick turned into a reckless challenge.
Watching Bissouma trudge down the tunnel at St James’ Park is unlikely to have spoilt what was otherwise a very entertaining afternoon for Graham Potter.
Tariq Lamptey ripped the Mapgpies to shreds as Brighton to secure a comfortable 3-0 victory in the north east.
The 19-year-old wing-back left Newcastle in disarray as Potter’s men raced into a 2-0 lead courtesy of Neal Maupay’s double inside the opening seven minutes before Aaron Connolly wrapped up a comprehensive 3-0 win despite Bissouma’s late dismissal.
The 24-year-old attempted a flick behind his head whilst tussling for the ball, yet missed it completely and caught the opposing full-back square in the face.
Shawn Michaels made the move his own during his WWE career, with the ‘Sweet Chin Music’ leaving plenty of opponents decked on the canvas.
Thankfully, Lewis was able to beat the count in this instance although manager Steve Bruce confirmed his new signing had a taken a knock from the challenge.
“Jamal has a nasty eye injury. We’ll see how bad it is,” he said. “We’re not too concerned about the cut but he might have an abrasion in his eye.”
