Jose Mourinho has insisted he now ‘believes’ in Tanguy Ndombele after the midfielder netted Tottenham’s winning goal against Lokomotiv Plovdiv.
The Lilywhites survived a scare in their Europa League qualifier to seal a 2-1 victory and book their place in the next round thanks to Ndombele’s strike and a penalty from captain Harry Kane.
Mourinho and Ndombele have had frosty relations since the Portuguese was appointed last November.
The Spurs boss became increasingly frustrated with the club-record signing’s fitness and attitude, frequently speaking out against Ndombele in the media.
However, the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss has now praised the 23-year-old’s ‘process of evolution’ under his stewardship.
Mourinho said: “Tanguy is in a process of evolution. Last season he wasn’t. He was stuck in a situation where I couldn’t see evolution.
“Now he is in a moment where he is training very, very well. Today he gave us what we needed in the last 30 minutes.
“Now I believe in Tanguy. I never doubted his ability but last season I doubted his effort and motivation. Now I think that Tanguy can do well for us.”
Mourinho believes his side dominated the encounter in Bulgaria but a mistake from Davinson Sanchez flattered the hosts.
“We were even more dominant in the second half but Davinson Sanchez made one mistake and gave them a corner and they scored,” he added.
“In that moment we had to change things. Then we were playing only with [Eric] Dier at the back and Ben Davies out wide.”
