Harry Redknapp has told talkSPORT he ‘doesn’t see anyone challenging Liverpool’ from the Premier League title… but has tipped Tottenham to be a surprise package this season.
Spurs made it past Chelsea to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday night with a penalty shoot-out win over their London rivals, in a game that showed their newfound strength in depth.
Jose Mourinho’s men have a hectic week, with Tuesday’s cup clash followed by a crucial Europa League play-off on Thursday, before facing Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.
It’ll spread the manager’s squad depth to the absolute limit but Tuesday’s result is an indication they’ll be able to handle it, with the likes of Harry Kane, Lucas Moura, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Matt Doherty on the bench, while Dele Alli wasn’t even in the matchday squad.
Redknapp says ‘there were two runners’ for the league title at the start of the season, but now believes there’s just one after Liverpool’s 100 per cent start to the campaign, while Man City ‘look off it’ after their 5-2 defeat to Leicester.
But the former Tottenham boss believes Spurs will be right up there after their shrewd-spending summer, with Gareth Bale still to come into Mourinho’s team and plenty of options on the bench.
“For me, there were two runners at the start of the season, Man City and Liverpool,” Redknapp said on Wednesday’s talkSPORT Breakfast.
“But Man City look off it at the moment. They’ve not been the same since Vincent Kompany finished, they’ve lost David Silva and they’ve lost Sergio Aguero now with injury.
“So I’d fancy Liverpool strongly.
“From what I’ve seen so far, Liverpool look on a different level. I don’t see anybody challenging them.
“But, I’ll be honest, I think Tottenham are going to have a good season.
“I watched them last night and they’ve got a strong squad.
“Have a look at their bench, they’ve got cover everywhere, really, except at centre-forward, and then they’ve got Gareth Bale to come.
“You know, Liverpool don’t play with an out-and-out targetman or a No.9, so why can’t Tottenham do the same? They’ve got Bale, Heung-Min Son, Lucas Moura…
“I think Tottenham have got a very good squad, very strong.”
