Manchester United urged to sign quality defender to play alongside Harry Maguire, as defensive woes continue in Brighton result – will it be Dayot Upamecano?

Manchester United may have got a thrilling win at Brighton this weekend but it only papers over the cracks Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team has.

Bruno Fernandes’ penalty in the TENTH minute of stoppage-time secured a dramatic 3-2 victory in a crazy game at the Amex Stadium.

The Red Devils looked set for a win with Marcus Rashford’s stunning solo goal giving them a 2-1 lead but Solly March’s equalised with a late header.

Just after the referee initially blew the full-time whistle, United were given a penalty after a VAR review adjudged Neal Maupay to have handled Harry Maguire’s goalbound header, which Fernandes stuck away.

Earlier, Maguire got on the scoresheet in reply to Maupay’s early spot-kick but despite Maguire’s success helping United score, he and the rest of the United defenders struggled.

Brighton hit the woodwork a record five times in the match, with the United defence looking shaky a number of times.

Maguire has struggled to live up to the hefty £80m price United forked out for him in 2019, but talkSPORT host Tony Cascarino believes the club need to do more to help their player out.

On what to do about Maguire, he told the Weekend Sports Breakfast: “They need someone alongside Harry… if he gets turned they really do get in trouble and are chasing back.

“Victor Lindelof’s not bad but I don’t think he’s the quality of a successful Manchester United team.”

Cascarino’s comments echo what Old Trafford legend Rio Ferdinand told talkSPORT a day earlier.

Perry Groves says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is out of his depth at Man United

“I’ve been banging the drum for a long time about buying a centre-half,” he said.

“It’s not going to solve every problem but it’s one of the biggest problems.

“There’s no dominant centre-half which makes the opposition think, ‘I’m going to have to do something today to get any change out of him’.

“You need that if you’re going to win anything,” adding that RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano is a player who springs to mind.

“Upamecano is young, good on the ball, athletic, strong, mobile, plays every game. He’s one you can see coming in right now.”
