“If it’s any consolation to Spurs fans, at least the penalty call came before the final whistle,” emails Peter Oh. Now now, that’s just cruel. Meanwhile, Stephen Carr (not that one) has his say. “I’ve no skin in this particular game but the end of that game was palpably unfair,” he says. And Mary Waltz makes clear her feelings on the matter. “What curse will leave this world first? VAR or Covid?”
Mourinho may actually combust after that. Mike Dean is frantically trying to reason with Hojbjerg, who is calmly asking the fourth official what on earth has just happened, and how anyone on the planet can argue that was a genuine handball. Spurs are denied victory after yet another handball controversy, an absolutely ludicrous stoppage-time decision which has Spurs players circling around the referee Peter Bankes at the final whistle. A Spurs player is sent off as a result ... meanwhile, up in the stands, Mike Ashley is rubbing his hands together with glee. Newcastle – somehow – have escaped with a point.
Wow. Wilson hammers it into the corner and Mourinho promptly storms down the tunnel. “Absolute joke,” yells a Tottenham player as Wilson wheels away. To compound the misery for Mourinho, that was Newcastle’s first shot on target.

90+3 min: It all stems from Shelvey’s free-kick towards Carroll. The striker leaps high and nods it down and, after he does, it appears to strike Dier’s right forearm ... the VAR is checking whether Carroll was onside in the buildup. He was. The referee is going to check the pitchside monitor ...
90 min: There will be five added minutes. Newcastle are screaming for another handball and the video assistant referee is checking it ...
89 min: Now Newcastle feel there is a handball down the other end, but there is nothing doing. It is all a bit desperate. Moments earlier, Spurs nearly gifted Newcastle a route back in. Wilson tried to wriggle in between defenders but Spurs hoovered up, only for Ben Davies to wallop his clearance straight against Hojbjerg. The ball cannoned off the Spurs midfielder’s chest and out for a corner. On another day, Davies could have been left red-faced. But, as it happens, they’ll be able to smile about a slapstick few seconds.
88 min: Spurs are adamant they should have a penalty, pointing towards a possible Newcastle handball – but the referee is having none of it.
86 min: Manquillo inadvertently smacks the ball at Kane. The striker is winded but crawls back on to the pitch to ensure the game is stopped. Down on the touchline, Mourinho is surely beaming with pride. Spurs are going to close this out, aren’t they?
83 min: ... Lamela fires it in a speed towards the front post and, again, Darlow has to be alert to keep it out. The Newcastle goalkeeper will come out of this game with a bit of pride, but too few of his team-mates will able to say the same. Spurs, who have spent the last week globetrotting across eastern Europe, have looked a little jaded in this second half.
82 min: Lewis upends Doherty on the edge of the box and gets a booking for what was a clear foul. Doherty was rampaging into the box before the substitute stopped him in his tracks. Lamela is stood over it ...
81 min: Carroll erupts after the referee ignores calls for a foul 25-odd yards from goal. In fairness to the striker, he may have had a point.
80 min: For the second game in a row (admittedly, there are 10 minutes to play) Newcastle have failed to register a shot on target after firing blanks against Brighton last weekend. They had two against West Ham, and scored them both.
79 min: Lamela is on for Tottenham in place of Moura.
78 min: Joseph Blade gets in touch on email, and the man has a point. Spurs have peppered the Newcastle goal without finding a second. “How many saves has Darlow made?” he asks. “Any chance of closing in on Tim Krul’s Premier League record of 14 (also against Spurs)?”
77 min: Steve Bruce introduces Big Andy Carroll. Almiron off.

76 min: Spurs change it up. Ndombele replaces Lo Celso.
73 min: Mourinho edges on to the pitch to cajole Doherty back to defend as Spurs lose possession. Joelinton looks to be running into a cul-de-sac but wins a foul. Mourinho is given a little ticking off by the fourth official Mike Dean for roaming out of his technical area. Things are getting a little tetchy for Spurs.
70 min: Bergwijn strikes at goal – but he scuffs his shot! Hojbjerg did well to spread play. Doherty delivered a bobbling cross from the right, which landed at the feet of Bergwijn but the Dutchman’s effort lacked any conviction.
69 min: José looks a little nervy. They could do with a second.
68 min: Jamal Lewis replaces the injured Ritchie.
66 min: Ritchie is down injured for Newcastle. Ritchie comes down with an almighty bump after going up to challenge Matt Doherty for a header, crashing into the full-back’s shoulder. Ritchie landed awkwardly but is sitting up receiving medical treatment.
62 min: Just as Newcastle seem to be getting into some kind of stride, Spurs go close. Giovani Lo Celso’s low drive tests an alert Karl Darlow at full stretch. Harry Kane smashes the rebound into Jamaal Lascelles, who is winded.
60 min: Newcastle work an opening but Hendrick screws his strike painfully wide. It was neat buildup play by Newcastle, who spread the ball wide to Ritchie via Shelvey. Joelinton cut the ball back for Almiron, who swivelled and found Hendrick. The former Burnley midfielder should have at least found the target.

59 min: Kane snatches at a half-chance! The ball comes in from the left, Moura knocks it down and Kane takes aim. Darlow holds on to it gratefully. Kane’s shot was packing some punch but it was straight at the Newcastle goalkeeper.
56 min: This is a drab game. Mourinho’s body language says as much. Newcastle have offered next to nothing and Spurs are going through the motions. The longer Newcastle cling on in there ...

54 min: Newcastle win a corner. Joelinton did brilliantly to play in Manquillo in the buildup but Winks is incensed the attack ends with a Newcastle set-piece. They overcook the corner and then Joelinton fails to find Fernandez after recycling it.
52 min: Joelinton is booked for dragging Moura to ground.

50 min: Moura loses Callum Wilson with ease and nods at goal at the near post. Darlow is there to gather but Newcastle again look exposed. Newcastle have been second-best to almost everything.
49 min: ... Darlow deals with it, but concedes another corner ...
48 min: Doherty wins Spurs an early corner ...
46 min: Bergwijn replaces Son. Is that an injury, or perhaps Mourinho is just resting the forward, who had played every minute for Spurs so far this season. A chance for Bergwijn, regardless.

Lucas Moura’s first league goal since December is the difference at the interval but, in truth, Spurs should be out of sight. Son Heung-min has twice rattled the woodwork and Newcastle have been lacklustre at best. Spurs have barely broken sweat.
45+2 min: Shelvey volleys wide! Newcastle get numbers at the back post, Matt Ritchie picks him out but the midfielder cannot get it on target.
44 min: Lascelles is down following a clash with Lo Celso, who catches the Newcastle captain around the ankle. Lascelles requires some treatment. There will be two minutes added time.
43 min: Shelvey is booked for a lunge on Lo Celso.
42 min: This is painfully one-sided. Ben Davies side-foots an inviting cross towards the back post but it is a little heavy and it bounces out for a goal-kick.
40 min: Son rattles the crossbar! Tottenham are knocking the ball about with little urgency, Newcastle are parked behind the ball so Son, played in by Doherty, who marauds infield from full-back, takes aim from the edge of the box and, for the second time this half, he smacks the woodwork.

37 min: Joelinton tries to bombard his way through the Tottenham backline but Sanchez eventually makes life difficult and crowds him out. Almiron then gave the ball away cheaply, allowing Spurs to break but Moura failed to find Kane on the edge of the box.
