Wolves complete signing of ‘generational talent’ Fabio Silva from Porto for a club record £35m – eclipsing fee paid for Raul Jimenez

Wolverhampton Wanderers have completed the club record signing of Fabio Silva from Porto on a five-year deal.

The 18-year-old has moved to Molineux after a reported £35million fee was agreed, eclipsing the £30m spent on Raul Jimenez in 2019.

Nuno Espirito Santo wanted to have his squad expanded following their Europa League exit to Sevilla in August and has got a potential superstar in his ranks.

Silva, a hot-shot striker, broke several of Ruben Neves’ records at Porto last season; he now holds the record as Porto’s youngest debutant in a league match, youngest starter and youngest scorer.

Wolves chairman Jeff Shi said: “Our recruitment team have been watching Fabio since he played for Portugal under-16s and they feel he has always been the best number nine coming through his age group anywhere in Europe.

“Fabio is a young player who shows not only incredible technical ability, but also his game intelligence for a player of his age is top class.

“He has the ability to drop in to link play and hold the ball up to bring others into play. He always then looks to get in the box and his movement and intelligence in the penalty area is as good as anyone.

“Fabio has the potential to be a generational talent and for us to see him develop under Nuno is very exciting. He is the type of player our fans will love.”

Although he is expected to be an understudy to Jimenez, it is unlikely Wolves’ new number 17 will be fazed by the big occasion.

Silva has represented his country at junior level from under-15s to under-19s and was part of the Under-17 side that reached the quarter-finals of the 2019 UEFA European Championships, scoring in a 4-2 group victory against Iceland.
