Brendan Rodgers thanked by Harvey Barnes’ father after Leicester City ace earns first England call-up

Harvey Barnes’ former footballer father has praised Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers and has thanked the boss after his son earned his first call-up to the senior England side.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder was one of three young players named in Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad for the first time, as the boss called up an extended 30-man squad for the upcoming triple-header against Wales, Belgium and Denmark.

Barnes has been rewarded for his brilliant form for Leicester since the Premier League restart last season.

The youngster was one of the club’s standout players last term as they finished fifth in the Premier League, and he’s continued that form into this campaign with the Foxes currently topping the table with three wins from three – including a 5-2 thrashing of Manchester City.

After that game, Rodgers hailed Barnes as a ‘superstar’.

And Paul Barnes has revealed it was the manager who broke the news to his son of his promotion to the senior England side.

Barnes senior, a former professional footballer himself, joined the talkSPORT Breakfast on Friday to react to his son’s news, and praised Rodgers’ impact on his career.

“It was a fantastic day yesterday,” he told Alan Brazil and Ray Parlour on the talkSPORT Breakfast.

“I was watching the TV and it was great to see his name hovering around it all, and then Harvey popped round and gave us the news.

“You can imagine there were a few tears, but it was a special moment.

“Brendan has been great.

“With him coming into Leicester, he’s an out-and-out coach who wants to work with the young lads and it can only help.

“After training yesterday it was Brendan who broke the news to him.

“He called him in, Harvey told me they were chatting a bit about the Man City game and going through some details, and then he said: ‘Congratulations, you’ve been called up’.

“So yeah, I think it was a great moment for him to have Brendan breaking the news to him.”
