Liverpool may now be ‘forced’ to spend in the January transfer window after their defensive crisis was cranked up another notch on Tuesday night in the Champions League.
The Reds are facing a potential disaster as Jurgen Klopp now has just one senior central defender fit after Fabinho was forced off in the 2-0 win over FC Midtjylland.
The Brazilian hobbled off the pitch in the first-half at Anfield, after he pulled up with what early reports claim is a hamstring injury.
Fabinho has been praised for his performances as the midfielder has filled in at centre-back for Virgil van Dijk, who has been ruled out for the season with a serious knee injury.
Joel Matip who is also currently on the sidelines, although the German may return to the team soon.
This latest blow to Fabinho means, though, that for the time being Joe Gomez is the club’s only fit experienced central defender, with 19-year-old Rhys Williams coming on in the Brazilian’s place against Midtjylland.
The huge blow in losing Van Dijk has led to hoards of supporters and a Liverpool legend urging the club to dip into the transfer market when it reopens in January.
Jamie Carragher has even told the Reds who to sign, saying they should make amends for not replacing Dejan Lovren in the summer by splashing out on RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano.
And talkSPORT host Jason Cundy believes the Premier League champions may well have to spend to keep their title defence hopes alive.
Speaking after Tuesday night’s clash, the former Chelsea defender said on The Sports Bar: “It’s concerning times for Liverpool.
“Fabinho has come in and has done a very good job. At times at the weekend he looked very much like a midfielder at centre-half – which he is – but largely he’s come in and Liverpool have looked pretty good.
“So losing him, this is a big miss. There’s a lack of experience there now, what Van Dijk has given them in the quality plus experience, Fabinho has got that as well.
“But they’ve now got a 19-year-old in there, and that changes things drastically. Gomez, I’m a huge fan of his, but you do feel he needs someone with a bit more experience alongside him.
“So there’s some work for Jurgen Klopp to do, and I just wonder whether the transfer window, it’s only eight weeks away now, and I wonder whether they may be forced into doing something in the market.”
