Samuel Eto’o launched a furious tirade at France Football after the publication called him a right winger in its Ballon d’Or Dream Team shortlist.
The legendary forward, who became a household name playing for Barcelona and Internazionale, scored 371 goals across 764 career club appearances during his illustrious career.
At the Nou Camp Eto’o won three LaLigas and two European Cups, before adding a Serie A winner’s medal and yet another Champions League while representing Inter.
He also remains Cameroon’s all-time leading scorer and third-most capped player with 56 goals in 118 appearances.
And despite enjoying most of the success while operating as a centre-forward, there was no room for Eto’o to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or Dream Team in his preferred position – much to his bemusement.
“Thank you, but I played 1-2 seasons on the right (yet I have 25 years of career as a centre forward),” Eto’o tweeted after seeing the right winger nominations.
“The lack of respect. @francefootball WHATEVER!”
Lionel Messi was the only current player who made the right winger nominations, with David Beckham, Luis Figo and Arjen Robben among the most modern names included on the list.
Footballing icons such as George Best, Kevin Keegan, Stanley Matthews also featured in the star-studded shortlist.
Eto’o hung up his boots in September 2019, having most recently played for Qatar SC.
