Troy Deeney EXCLUSIVE: Watford striker addresses Tottenham transfer link and reveals conversation with Jose Mourinho

Troy Deeney is talkSPORT’s newest signing and he’s been speaking about how close he came to making another big move this summer.

The Watford striker was linked with Tottenham after the Hornets’ relegation from the Championship, but stayed put as he looks to lead the club straight back to the Premier League.

Deeney has joined the talkSPORT Breakfast team and Wednesday was his first day in the studio.

Host Laura Woods was quick to ask the experienced frontman about the possible move that ultimately never materialised.

“I’m 32. A lot of clubs were looking for a different style of striker as a back up,” he explained.

“Obviously everyone wants to play a certain way but when you get into certain moments you need someone to hold it up or if you are losing a game go long.

“There were a lot of talks. Some things materialised some things didn’t.

“The ones that were getting closer you start thinking are you ready to go back to the Premier League to be a bit part player.

“I’ve been at Watford ten years and then you start weighing the options of calling it a day. When you get into that mould of being a super sub you can’t go back.”

On his chat with Spurs boss Mourinho, he said: “I saw Jose at the Watford vs Spurs game pre-season. That’s all I will say.”

Deeney did speak of his admiration for Tottenham, though, and what they could offer compared to smaller clubs.

He said: “When you get to Spurs you know the difference between the lesser clubs and the big boys. It’s a different experience.

“I think we all watched the Amazon thing, their training ground is ridiculous. Their stadium is ridiculous.

“You want to test yourself as well. I’m not going to go in there and say ‘I’m better than Harry Kane’.

“I know what I can do and what I can deliver and there’s not many people who can do what I can do.”

There were also other links to Premier League clubs, including West Brom and West Ham in the final days of the transfer window.

When asked if it would have to have been a Premier League club to leave Watford for, he said: “Or abroad as well. You get those offers coming in. Sometimes you see the number and you think ‘ooh’ it’s worth thinking about.

“When you have some of the offers I had. Sorry, I’m being a bit cryptic and I don’t want to put things out there and goes around the media and I don’t want to kill myself. I’m trying to learn.

“You can rush to get back in the Premier League. Let’s say for example, West Ham and for whatever reason they get relegated. You’ve gone back for a seven month period.

“Am I better off getting Watford re-promoted and staying with them? The redemption story kind of thing and finishing my career with Watford. They are the conversations you have with your family.”

For now, Deeney remains at Watford and he gave an update on how things were going at the club.

He said: “They are alright. We are working though some issues. We should hopefully be back on the pitch in ten days or so.

“The manager is quality to be fair.”
