‘Villa or Real?’ – Confused Tottenham fan doesn’t know who Villarreal are in stunning call, as he INSISTS ‘Spurs will win Europa League’ after beating… LASK

A Tottenham fan was left thoroughly confused after calling into talkSPORT to proclaim how confident he was that Spurs will be crowned Europa League winners this season.

And why does he think that? Because they beat the mighty LASK at White Hart Lane, of course…

After fighting their way past a load of pub and farmer teams in the qualifying rounds – we’re joking, don’t worry – Jose Mourinho’s side got their group stage campaign off to a flyer with a 3-0 win over the Austrian club on Thursday night.

And despite their lowly opposition – LASK finished fourth in the Austrian Bundesliga last term – there were plenty of reasons for excitement as Gareth Bale made his second full debut for the club, while fellow summer signing Carlos Vinicius bagged two assists.

But it appears some in north London are getting a little carried away.

One of them was Spurs supporter, Darren, who phoned in to tell Sports Bar hosts Andy Goldstein and Jason Cundy that Tottenham are shoo-ins to end their long wait for silverware this season.

And what happened next definitely brightened up our Friday morning…

Asked what he learned from the game against LASK, Darren the Spurs fan told The Sports Bar: “That we’re going to win the Europa League!”

Well, as you can imagine, that led to plenty of eye rolls from the hosts, who said they’d heard it all before and asked why this season will be any different.

“Because we’ve got Jose Mourinho,” Darren replied.

Mourinho was appointed last year to lead Tottenham to trophies and, to be fair, after their start to the season it appears they may have a shot

The Special One was in charge last season, of course, when Spurs won the grand total of… erm, nothing.

So why does Darren think this year is their year?

“Look at every other team in the Europa League, and then look at us.

“I mean, look at LASK, we demolished LASK! Tell me what other team is going to come close to us?”

To which Cundy said: “Well how about Villarreal, for a start? What about the teams that dropped down from the Champions League into the Europa League?”

And that appeared to leave Darren, bless him, a little bit confused.

“Villa or Real?!”
