Arsenal on worst run for 34 years and ‘questions must be asked of Mikel Arteta’ – especially after constant criticism of Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Does Mikel Arteta get an easier ride than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer?

Well, considering Arsenal are now behind Manchester United in the Premier League table, it is surprising to see Arteta largely avoid widespread criticism.

Especially as Solskjaer has been lambasted on an almost weekly basis since the start of the season.

It’s been a mixed campaign for the Gunners, who ended last term on a high by winning the FA Cup and enjoyed a positive summer transfer window, adding the likes of Willian, Gabriel and Thomas Partey to their ranks.

But the 2020/21 season has seen Arteta’s side remarkably inconsistent, with Sunday’s draw with Leeds their first stalemate of the campaign after four wins and four draws in the top-flight.

They ended the weekend in 11th place, and are currently on their worse scoring run in 34 years having netted only nine times in their nine Premier League matches

The Gunners have now gone over seven hours without a goal from open play in league football, with star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scoring just once from open play all season.

So, does Arteta deserve to be criticised as much as Solskjaer? That question was put to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook on Sunday’s Darren Bent’s Boot Room.

“Arsenal are 11th now – one place below Manchester United,” Crook replied to former England striker Bent. “And I think we can all agree United had a poor start to the season.

“We’ve dished out plenty of stick to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer; obviously Ole has had a lot of scrutiny, but questions do have to be asked of Arteta.

“I suppose the difference is that he has delivered a trophy – the FA Cup win at the end of last season.

“But, yeah; 11th in the table, negative goal difference, a long time since they scored from open play… Aubameyang seems to have completely forgotten where the back of the net is.

“I think it is concerning.”
