Former Arsenal boss Unai Emery is reviving his managerial career with Villarreal in Spain.
The Spaniard guided his side to an impressive draw against LaLiga champions Real Madrid this weekend, and they were unlucky to not claim all three points.
The result sees Villarreal in third place having played ten LaLiga matches so far this season – and they are above both Barcelona AND Real Madrid!
Mariano opened the scoring for Los Blancos early on, before Gerard Moreno’s 76th-minute penalty brought Emery’s side level.
One day after Villarreal secured their impressive point, Emery’s former club Arsenal struggled in a goalless draw at newly-promoted Leeds.
The Gunners, who played most of the second-half with ten men as Nicolas Pepe was sent off for headbutting Ezgjan Alioski, were fortunate to leave Elland Road with a point.
Leeds hit the woodwork THREE times through Patrick Bamford, Rodrigo and Raphinha and could not get past an in-form Bernd Leno.
Arsenal have now gone 450 minutes of Premier League football without scoring from open play with just one win in their last five matches.
They also have just nine goals in nine league matches this season – their worst scoring run in 34 years!
Mikel Arteta succeeded Emery at the Emirates last December, with the former Gunners midfielder brought back to the Emirates for his first managerial post having served as an assistant coach under Pep Guardiola at Man City.
Emery’s 18-month spell as boss came to an end almost exactly one year ago, in the midst of a seven-match winless run – Arsenal’s worst period of form since February 1992.
He signed a three-year contract with Villarreal in the summer and appears to be proving his doubters wrong in his homeland.
Villarreal continued their unbeaten home form in their draw with Real Madrid, but Emery believes his side deserved all three points.
He said: “In the second-half we have accumulated four clear chances to score and they only had one.
“Drawing with the league champion can leave you satisfied, but when you look at what happened over the whole 90 minutes, I have the feeling that the game should have been ours.
“That does not deviate us from our path, from our idea of what we want to do, but my satisfaction is reduced because I think we deserved to win.”
Emery added: “What I want is stability in our growth, gaining credibility and confidence.
“The ambition and demand that I impose on myself makes me believe that we have left two points today, and that leaves us not satisfied.
“However, we are taking the right steps and on the way to growing.”
