Football fans in Argentina and Naples were visibly upset by Diego Maradona’s tragic death on Wednesday.
The football icon died at the age of 60 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his home in Tigre.
Maradona captained his country to World Cup glory in 1986 and had successful spells with Napoli, Barcelona, Argentinos Juniors and Boca Juniors.
He will be remembered as one of the greatest footballers to play the game.
Maradona scored 81 goals in 188 league games for Napoli between 1984 and 1991 and his fans gathered at the top of the Quartieri Spagnoli in Naples to pay their respects on Wednesday evening.
They were pictured next to a mural of the former Argentina manager.
The news of the death has hit the country so hard that the country’s president Alberto Fernandez declared three days of official mourning.
Huge crowds of people were seen crying outside of Maradona’s home in Argentina.
Tributes from the biggest names in football poured in for Maradona, including messages from Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Pele.
John Motson, who commentated on the 1986 World Cup, joined talkSPORT to reminisce about Maradona’s brilliance.
He said: “It’s very sad indeed. I know he had a blood clot in November and he wasn’t in the best of health, but this came as a big shock to me this afternoon.
“In fact I was at the Argentina match commentating against Belgium in 1986, he scored two goals and they were absolutely fantastic.
“It’s probably not quite as memorable as the Hand of God goal in the quarter-final or the second goal against England, which Bobby Robson, the England manager at the time, described as a ‘bloody miracle’.
“He was capable of miracles on the pitch. The great players of my generation – where does he stand?
“You have Johan Cruyff, Pele, Bobby Charlton, but Diego Maradona would comfortably be in any of those categories because he was an absolutely brilliant footballer.”
