Half of Bruno Fernandes’ Premier League goals have been penalties as Manchester United playmaker overtakes Denis Irwin’s spot kick haul

Bruno Fernandes remarkably scored his TWELFTH penalty in almost 11 months as a Manchester United player on Saturday.

The Portugal playmaker converted at the second time of asking as the Red Devils edged a spirited West Brom side to claim their first victory at Old Trafford this season.

Fernandes has now scored 19 times in 34 appearances for United, with 12 of them coming from 12 yards since he assumed penalty duties against Watford in February.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men avoided becoming just the third side in the club’s history to start a campaign with five winless home league matches on Saturday evening.

The 26-year-old has only missed one spot kick – at Newcastle last month – and he has now trumped Denis Irwin’s total of 11 penalty goals for United.

United have been awarded the joint-most amount of penalties in the Premier League since Fernandes’ debut on February 1 – level with Leicester City with nine.

Unsurprisingly, Fernandes has scored the most in that time (converting 8), one ahead of second-placed Jamie Vardy.

“We’re delighted to get three points, of course,” United boss Solskjaer said after the match. “First win in league this season and a clean sheet, so we’re happy with that.

“Very tight calls and I think he probably made two right decisions with the pens… three right decisions because Sam was off the line.

“We know we can play better than this and we certainly could’ve made it more comfortable if we’d taken our chances early on.

“When you don’t do that it’s always an edge to the game and we saw it edgy towards the end.

“It was important to get that win, you could see that. We didn’t have composure or quality to get the second goal that would have made it more comfortable.”
