‘I take total responsibility’ – Mikel Arteta concedes Arsenal did not play like a team in home defeat to Aston Villa

Mikel Arteta has taken full responsibility for Arsenal’s 3-0 home defeat to Aston Villa.

The Gunners were undone by a Bukayo Saka own goal and a second-half brace from Ollie Watkins on Sunday.

The result was the club’s fourth Premier League defeat of the season as they missed the chance to climb to sixth in the table.

Arsenal boss Arteta said: “First of all congratulations to Aston Villa for the victory and the way they played tonight.

“I thought they were really, really strong. From our side, I take total responsibility because it’s not acceptable the performance that we put in from the beginning.

“My role is to get the team performing, every three days at the highest level.

“Today we haven’t done that and I feel that since I got appointed here [last December], it’s the first time I haven’t seen a team on the pitch.”

Arsenal secured a 1-0 win at Manchester United last weekend, but were second best against a ruthless Aston Villa side.

Alexandre Lacazette, Rob Holding and Nicolas Pepe had chances to equalise, before Watkins killed the game with two goals in three minutes.

Arteta, who confirmed £45million signing Partey suffered a thigh injury, added: “This is football. When you are not at the races, when you are not at your best, teams destroy you in the Premier League.

“This is what they’ve done to us today.

“You don’t win the duels, you are late, they are more focused, more determined in every ball, you don’t defend your box well enough and when you have the chances, you don’t put them away, it’s impossible to win a football match.”

Arteta conceded his Arsenal players are not creating enough chances in front of goal.

He said: “The ones we created they were clear enough to score at least a goal.

“Certainly, when you look at the numbers we’ve produced in the last few games, it’s not enough.”
