James Maddison reacts to England snub by Gareth Southgate following Leicester’s Europa League win against Braga

James Maddison has admitted his disappointment after being left out of the England squad by Gareth Southgate.

Kelechi Iheanacho’s brace kept dominant Leicester on course to reach the Europa League knock-out stages after a crushing 4-0 win over Braga.

The striker’s double helped the Foxes take control of Group G and they sit top, three points clear of Braga, after a third straight win in Europe.

Iheanacho has now scored three times in the campaign as he deputised for Jamie Vardy, with Brendan Rodgers having the luxury of resting his eight-goal top scorer.

Abel Ruiz missed a fine chance to give Braga a lifeline before Dennis Praet and Maddison wrapped up victory for the Foxes’ biggest European win.

Carlos Carvalhal’s side, expected to be Leicester’s main challengers for top spot, were simply brushed aside and halfway through the stage the Foxes are in pole position to win the group.

While Vardy will continue to attract plenty of headlines as his ‘Benjamin Button’ fairy-tale story continues to gather yet more chapters, the return from injury of Maddison has been a welcome boost for Rodgers.

The England international has four goals from nine games in all competitions this season and was the Premier League’s most creative player in his debut season at the King Power Stadium.

Yet the decision by Gareth Southgate to ignore him for the upcoming games against Ireland, Belgium and Ireland has hurt the midfielder.

“Yes, if I’m honest,” the 23-year-old told BT Sport on Thursday.

Danny Murphy: James Maddison is worth more than Jadon Sancho

“I want to be in the England squad, that’s what I dreamed of as a little boy. I’ve had a taste of it and I want more.

“Listen, I am back fit now, I’m getting the minutes in the legs, but I can’t control whether or not I am in the England squad.

“I don’t pick the team but I can only concentrate on what I am doing at Leicester.

“If I can keep my form for Leicester then hopefully the rest takes care of itself.”
