Liverpool injury fear with Jordan Henderson to be assessed after suffering possible hamstring issue during Belgium clash

Jordan Henderson is set to be assessed after suffering a possible hamstring injury in a potentially huge blow to Liverpool.

Henderson, the Reds captain, was withdrawn at half-time of England’s 2-0 defeat by Belgium on Sunday, with manager Gareth Southgate later revealing ‘tightness’ which would be looked in to.

“Jordan had a bit of tightness at half-time and felt he couldn’t carry on,” said Southgate. “We’ll have to assess him when we get back.”

Harry Winks replaced Henderson in Leuven, and there are now doubts over whether the Liverpool star will be able to feature against Iceland on Wednesday evening.

While Southgate will rue not having one of his key players available – even though the Nations League clash is a dead rubber – the real worry right now is for Jurgen Klopp.

The Liverpool boss is already facing a defensive injury crisis with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez possibly sidelined for the remainder of the season, and Trent Alexander-Arnold missing for the foreseeable future.

Henderson’s midfield partner Fabinho has filled in at centre-back recently, although he’s also been suffering from a thigh issue and Klopp would prefer not to drop him into the back-line if Henderson is already facing a period on the sidelines.

Speaking after Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Man City prior to the international break – the match in which Alexander-Arnold suffered his injury – Klopp hit out at the intense fixture schedule this season.

“Hopefully we can play the Euros next summer but if we continue like this let’s see which players can be part of that,” said Klopp. “Trent will be out for England [for the three games].

“What injury he has we don’t know but he cannot play for England and he is not the first and will not be the last that Gareth Southgate will miss. He’ll have a scan, then we will see.

Mark Lawrenson praises Liverpool's defenders but admits Jurgen Klopp must sign a quality centre-back in January following Joe Gomez injury

“We played [last month] after the international break at 12.30pm on Saturday at Everton. Some of my players were coming back from Peru. These kind of things should not happen.

“I spoke about two weeks ago – in a meeting with the person responsible at the Premier League who organised the fixtures. We cannot change it [I was told]. It is not about Manchester United, Liverpool and City.

“Usually in the season we all have a [hectic] November and December. This year the October is like a December, the November is like a November and the December is still like a December.

“The 12.30pm game – that is a killer. If the Tuesday [Champions League playing] teams are in contention for the Saturday 12.30 that is OK. But the Wednesday teams should not be.”
