Liverpool may be ‘more defensively sound’ and ‘could concede fewer goals’ WITHOUT Trent Alexander-Arnold, explains John Barnes

Liverpool fans are worried sick about their defensive crisis with THREE senior defenders now on the Anfield treatment table.

Joe Gomez joined fellow centre-back Virgil van Dijk on Liverpool’s lengthy lay-off list after he sustained a knee injury on international duty with England.

In fact, Andy Robertson is the only first-choice defender who doesn’t have an injury, with Trent Alexander-Arnold picking up a calf strain in the Reds’ draw at Manchester City last weekend.

Alexander-Arnold’s is expected to be out for up to four weeks, so while his isn’t as serious as Gomez or Van Dijk’s injuries but it’s another setback Jurgen Klopp really didn’t need.

However, John Barnes believes it’s not all doom and gloom. The Liverpool legend believes the team should carry on playing as they normally would despite having all these defensive absentees.

Barnes also suggested that Liverpool could be ‘more defensively sound’ and may concede fewer goals without the 22-year-old right-back.

He told Bonus Code Bets: “One player getting injured, Trent Alexander-Arnold in this case, can’t have that sort of impact on the team where it completely stops their way of playing, it is disrespectful to the other ten players on the pitch who are fighting for the shirt.

“Trent being injured is not something that Liverpool cannot overcome because new additions can come in and the tactics get slightly tweaked.

“The replacement for Trent might be more defensively sound and therefore Liverpool could concede fewer goals.

“When one player is missing, it is not a devastating and negative loss like some people are led to think.

“Depending on the game, Liverpool can have James Milner there, who has so much experience in the big games.

“However, I wouldn’t be surprised if the young boy Neco Williams plays, he’s a terrific talent.”
