Mesut Ozil responds as Arsenal mascot Gunnersaurus RETURNS to the Emirates – but it’s not Jerry Quy wearing the suit

Gunnersaurus is back! Although perhaps not as you know him.

Indeed, the beloved dinosaur has shared a picture of himself returning to the Emirates for the first time since March, but Jerry Quy, who played the popular figure for 27 years, was not underneath the suit.

Arsenal sparked public outrage on Transfer Deadline Day back in October by making the man who plays Gunnersaurus redundant – and the story quickly became something much bigger.

Gunners outcast Mesut Ozil, offered to pay Quy’s entire salary so that Gunnersaurus could live on, and the move quickly became a PR disaster for Arsenal.

But they always insisted Gunnersaurus would not be gone forever, and the mascot announced his return to the Emirates via Twitter on Tuesday night.

While Quy was part of 55 redundancies made as part of cost-cutting measures due to the coronavirus crisis, it is understood he has been offered the chance to be on a new roster of people who will rotate the role of Gunnersaurus.

An Arsenal spokesperson said: “As we’ve always said Gunnersaurus is an important part of Arsenal and a popular figure for our fans around the world.

“Gunner never went away but due to the virus restrictions there have been limited opportunities for him to appear in public.”

Ozil responded to the news, quoting Gunnersaurus’ tweet with the message: “Happy to see you back where you belong.”

However, it is understood the return of Gunnersaurus has nothing to do with Ozil’s offer.
