Olivier Giroud set to push for Chelsea exit in January after France boss Didier Deschamps urges him to resolve situation

Olivier Giroud is set to push to leave Chelsea in January – unless he is given more playing time by Frank Lampard.

According to The Athletic, the World Cup winner, 34, wants more first team action as he reaches the tail end of his career

Giroud appeared nailed on to leave the Blues last season after finding his first-team chances limited due to Tammy Abraham’s sparkling form.

However, he scored eight goals in 11 matches towards the end of the campaign to help Chelsea seal Champions League qualification and earn himself renewed importance in Lampard’s plans.

But the former Arsenal striker has barely featured this season due to the strong form of both summer arrival Timo Werner and Abraham.

On Monday, France boss Didier Deschamps urged Giroud to find a resolution to his current situation at Stamford Bridge.

Giroud is his nation’s second-highest goalscorer with 42 goals in 104 appearances, but needs to play to be assured of a place in France’s squad for next summer’s European Championship.

“Olivier Giroud knows it – the situation he’s in today cannot drag on forever. Before March he will have to find another situation than this one,” Deschamps told French radio station RTL.

“It is for him to see, he will decide.

“But in terms of the France team, psychologically and physically for him, he has every interest in having playing time. I hope that by January he will have more playing time.

“After that, he will stay [in the squad] or he won’t. He knows what I think about it, I told him, although I don’t forget what he can do and what he might be able to do again.”
