Screamer against boyhood club Liverpool or earning ‘keys to Glasgow’ by downing Rangers? Celtic hero John Hartson picks his greatest goal

It’s a big question. You’ve scored more than 200 career goals, but which one did you enjoy the most?

Celtic hero John Hartson has scored plenty of special ones, too. Big European nights, Old Firm derbies, Scottish Cup finals… he’s netted in them all.

Like Alan Shearer, the Welshman was one of those strikers who could score from anywhere. He was no tap-in merchant.

Speaking about the art of goalscoring, and many other things, Hartson is the subject of the latest episode of our Up Front With series, which you can hear in full on Saturday at 8pm on talkSPORT.

While it comes as no surprise that his favourite goal came in a Celtic shirt, it may surprise fans that it wasn’t scored at Parkhead… or even Ibrox!

In fact, it was at Anfield, against the club Hartson supported as a boy, on a huge European night back in 2003. Fair enough.

“My favourite goal was a peach against Liverpool in the quarter-final of the UEFA Cup,” Hartson told talkSPORT.

“We were 1-1 from the first leg at Celtic Park; Emile Heskey and Henrik Larsson had scored.

“So we went to Anfield the following Thursday knowing that we had to score.

“I got the second one which wrapped up the game. It was from about 30 yards after a one-two with the magical Henrik Larsson, around Sami Hyypia.

“They were the club I supported as a child and I still look out for their results, mainly because of Ian Rush. He was my icon growing up in Wales.

“I remember coming off the pitch and the Liverpool fans stayed behind and clapped us off.”

Nonetheless, Hartson of course has fond memories of playing against Rangers, given he scored nine times against Celtic’s famous rivals.

The 45-year-old recalls being the most popular man in town whenever he bagged the winner in the Old Firm derby.

Well… in one half of Glasgow, at least.

“I knew the volume and the size of Celtic, but nobody can ever prepare you for that,” he added. “Two or three thousand fans turned up on the day I signed!

“I scored nine against Rangers and I scored the winning goal in four consecutive games. The first one was just unbelievable.

“You want to score for Celtic. And you want to score against their rivals in the derby.

“I had the keys to one half of the city at one stage!”
