Adrian Durham questions whether Jack Grealish should still be Aston Villa captain after latest COVID-19 breach

Adrian Durham has questioned if Jack Grealish should still be Aston Villa captain after his latest breach of COVID-19 regulations.

Grealish and Ross Barkley escaped punishment after having dinner together at a London restaurant to celebrate the latter’s 27th birthday.

However, the capital is under Tier-2 lockdown restrictions, meaning those from different households are not able to mix.

It is the second time the midfielder has flouted regulations since the start of the pandemic, with the 25-year-old fined two weeks wages for attending a party in March.

Boss Dean Smith admitted he felt uneasy sanctioning the players considering they eat together every day at the club’s Bodymoor Heath training facility.

But Durham believes the England international must be held accountable for his actions, or risk losing the captaincy.

He said on Drive: “I look at it this way, how many times has Dean Smith got to remind him of what his responsibilities are?

“And at what point, after how many reminders of his responsibilities, does he cease to be the right player to captain the club the size of Aston Villa?

“Terrific player isn’t he Jack Grealish? At what point does it become wrong?

“Yet another breach of COVID regulations and he is reminded of his responsibilities. This is the Aston Villa captain.

“Captain of a Premier League club, an England international, somebody who has had a huge amount of backing from the fans, the club and the media alike.

“And yet, he has gone and done it again and has to be reminded of his responsibilities again.

“I would ask the question: At what point, what does he have to do to be seen to be the Villa captain?”
