Arsenal ‘playing like a promoted team’ says Tony Cascarino, who believes Mikel Arteta is facing sack unless Gunners’ form quickly improves

Mikel Arteta could soon lose his job as Arsenal are playing like a team promoted from the Championship.

This is according to former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino, who offered a withering assessment of the Gunners ahead of their London derby against the Blues this evening.

Chelsea head into the match flying high and they could move second in the Premier League with a win – but things are not so rosy at the Emirates.

Arsenal are only four points clear of the relegation zone after their first 14 matches of the season, having won just four and lost EIGHT of those games.

Depending on other results this weekend, Arsenal could see themselves only a single point clear of the bottom three come Monday morning.

And while Cascarino does not believe Arsenal are in a relegation battle, he admits the Gunners are playing like a team who spent last season in the Championship.

Martin Keown says 'freefalling' Arsenal are in crisis and calls for players to start fighting for the club in every match - starting with Chelsea on Boxing Day

Asked by Weekend Sports Breakfast co-host Natalie Sawyer if Arsenal are in a relegation battle, Casc replied: “I don’t think they are, but they are playing like they are.

“We can all sit here and say it’s Arsenal Football Club and they have a stadium that is incredible and was built for one of the top clubs in European football, but the team are playing like a team that has come up from the Championship and are struggling and hanging on.

“They are playing very counter-attack and never getting enough bodies in danger areas in the other end of the pitch.

“They have got a number of games after Chelsea where you would expect them to get quite a few points, and if they have an indifferent time there it will be curtains for the manager.

“But whether it gets them into relegation… I still think they’ve got way too much quality to be in that battle. But they are playing like a team that is in trouble.”
