Brentford progress to first major semi-final thanks to Josh Dasilva’s second-half winner as wasteful Newcastle crash out of Carabao Cup

Brentford reached a first major cup semi-final in their 131-year history on Tuesday night as Josh DaSilva’s second half-winner sent Newcastle crashing out of the Carabao Cup.

The outstanding DaSilva struck on 66 minutes as the former Arsenal midfielder expertly guided Sergio Canos’ lofted ball past Karl Darlow.

The result also saw the Bees secure a fourth Premier League scalp in this year’s competition – having previously beaten Southampton, West Brom and Fulham.

It was a night to forget for Toon boss Steve Bruce, who made four changes to his side for the trip to the Championship promotion chasers.

Isaac Hayden, Ryan Fraser, Jamal Lewis and Jacob Murphy came into the side, while Callum Wilson led the line once again.

Brentford counterpart Thomas Frank, meanwhile, surprisingly named ex-Newcastle striker Ivan Toney, the current Championship’s top scorer, on the bench.

Wilson and Ryan Fraser forced good saves from Brentford goalkeeper Luke Daniels, while Saman Ghoddos hit the crossbar for the Bees but the first half finished goalless.

It was Brentford who made their pressure count after the interval though, with Toney coming on during the closing stages of the game against his former side as they looked to extend their lead.

Andy Carroll was introduced as a second-half substitute, but was unable to make a real impact on proceedings.

Bruce’s men will be ruing an opportunity missed as victory would have seen them reach a first cup semi-final since Mike Ashley took over in 2007.
