Chelsea came from behind to beat Leeds 3-1 on Saturday night, delighting the 2,000 returning fans at Stamford Bridge as they went top of the league.
Patrick Bamford opened the scoring for the visitors and silenced the supporters of his old team, but Olivier Giroud, Kurt Zouma and Christian Pulisic ensured the home fans left happy.
Chelsea started brightly with two chances inside the opening two minutes.
Hakim Ziyech had a shot pushed wide and Olivier Giroud came close from the resulting corner.
However, the Blues were stunned in the fourth minute as Patrick Bamford rounded Edouard Mendy and finished into an empty net.
Five minutes later, Timo Werner produced a shocker.
Mason Mount’s corner was flicked on by Giroud and fell in front of Werner at the far post.
However, he somehow failed to convert and instead brought the ball back away from the net.
As Leeds keeper Illan Meslier attempted to grab ahold of it, Werner got one final touch and flicked it up onto the bar.
It was subsequently cleared.
Thankfully for Werner, Giroud spared his blushes by finding the equaliser on 28 minutes.
The France forward turned in Reece James’ low cross, after Ziyech had sent the right-back down the line with a neat piece of play.
Half-time arrived with the scores still locked at 1-1.
As the second period began, the hosts took control.
Zouma headed Chelsea into the lead just past the hour mark, the defender working himself free to nod home Mount’s accurate corner kick.
Several further chances were missed by the Blues with Giroud and Werner both culpable.
It took until Leeds committed more to attack for Chelsea to seal victory in added time.
Mateo Kovacic released Werner who set up Pulisic to tap in the third goal. Full-time – 3-1 Chelsea.
