Daniel Amartey handball in Leicester box WAS looked at by VAR, confirm PGMOL, as Crystal Palace fans demand penalty

Leicester’s draw at Crystal Palace was two points dropped from a Foxes perspective – but were the home side denied a penalty?

Second-placed Leicester failed to take advantage of Liverpool’s surprise draw to West Brom on Sunday as they could only manage a 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park.

Harvey Barnes cancelled out Wilfried Zaha’s opener but Leicester will feel they should have won the match as Kelechi Iheanacho missed a penalty in the first half.

The visitors were the more threatening side but an incident in the second half suggests they were fortunate to not have a penalty given against them.

Palace fans on social media insist their side should have been awarded a spot-kick in the second half with the ball striking Daniel Amartey inside the Leicester box.

Replays show it did in fact touch the Leicester defender’s hand as he and Eagles striker Christian Benteke contested the ball inside the Foxes box.

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg believes Palace have every right to feel aggrieved and suggested the incident should have been looked at again by the VAR.

Clattenburg said: “It’s a really interesting one because you can understand how the referee has missed it initially.

“But Crystal Palace will be feeling really disappointed because when the ball comes in, Benteke jumps in with Amartey. Amartey’s hand is out but it’s actually [Cheikhou] Kouyate who appeals.

“Therefore the VAR [Robert Jones] should have automatically checked because the ball’s out of play.

“But from the camera behind the goal I thought ‘is that a potential penalty for handball?’ So therefore the VAR should have checked it.

“He didn’t because less than 20 seconds from Benteke heading it over to Kasper Schmeichel taking the goal kick, the ball was back in play so it wasn’t checked. There wasn’t enough time.

“I feel he should’ve taken his time and used all the evidence that’s available. The camera angle we can see, Amartey’s hands are above his shoulder and he’s clearly handballed it.”

However, a statement by the PGMOL, the body responsible for the way the game is officiated, released to talkSPORT says that VAR DID look at the incident.

It read: “It was looked at by the VAR but cleared quickly as they felt it came off Benteke’s head.”
