Former Derby boss Frank Lampard believes John Terry would welcome a ‘great opportunity’ to take on his first managerial role at the struggling Championship outfit.
The pair achieved great success together at Chelsea for many years, and Blues boss Lampard is convinced the current Aston Villa assistant is ‘destined’ to make the step up.
“I think John is destined to be a manager. He is obviously working very well alongside Dean Smith over the last few years at Aston Villa, so would have been learning a lot,” Lampard said on Tuesday.
“But what John knows and his experiences in the game as a player will be huge, I know that from playing alongside him so long what he has to offer.
“I think it is a great opportunity potentially for him if true and for Derby.”
Lampard added: “John will be a hungry, ambitious manager, whether it’s Derby or whatever other opportunities come his way as he goes along.
“I don’t know anything [about the Derby link] but John is going to be a fantastic coach in my opinion.”
Lampard previously managed the Rams to a narrow play-off final defeat at the hands of Villa during the 2018/19 season in what was his maiden managerial campaign, with Terry celebrating promotion to the Premier League with the Midlands giants.
Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney is currently in interim charge of the Rams, who are five points adrift of safety at the bottom of the second tier.
Former England boss Steve McClaren also recently returned to the club last week in a technical director and advisory role.
