January is a nervy time for decision makers at football clubs, especially when they could lose their best players.
And next month could see some huge freebies up for grabs, which will no doubt alert Juventus who have a talent for picking up quality free transfers.
Liverpool bosses are likely to be well aware of this considering Georginio Wijnaldum’s current deal expires in the summer.
It is said the midfielder has asked his club for more time before deciding whether to accept a new one.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano writes Liverpool presented him with their offer at the start of December, but he wants a few more days to mull his options.
“Wijnaldum is an integral player now, considering the injuries they’ve got, and I can’t understand why they haven’t got him tied down to a new deal,” former Premier League defender Rio Ferdinand wondered earlier this month.
“He plays in any one of the three midfield positions – holding, box-to-box and the 10, which he does great for the Netherlands.
“He’s a huge player.”
Lionel Messi is also currently in his final year at Barcelona after performing a stunning U-turn in the summer despite being so determined for a move away.
It will be interesting to see if he is still keen to leave in 2021.
Arsenal outcast Mesut Ozil will also be available for nothing and Diego Costa has already left Atletico Madrid and is being eyed by Wolves.
In fact, there are a number of big-name footballers who will not cost any interested clubs a penny after June 30, 2021.
