Chelsea confirmed their status as winners of their Champions League group in style as they tore second place Sevilla apart in their own backyard.
The Blues won 4-0 with the sensational Olivier Giroud bagging all of the goals.
It’s a good time to be a Chelsea fan right now with the team in the mix to challenge for the Premier League title this season, and this latest result will see Frank Lampard’s side, in theory, get an easier draw in the Champions League round-of-16.
And the victory against the Spanish side threw up a fascinating stat that will get Chelsea fans very excited indeed.
It was their fourth consecutive Champions League win for the first time since the 2011/12 campaign – the same season Chelsea just so happened to win the entire competition!
There’s still a very long way to go before we can realistically talk up Chelsea’s chances of becoming European champions for a second time, but when you consider the record Giroud broke on Wednesday night anything is possible.
The striker’s quadruple took him above French football icon Zinedine Zidane’s Champions League goal record.
Giroud unsurprisingly earned a huge amount of adulation for his four goals, with talkSPORT’s Danny Mills hailing the 34-year-old’s ‘outstanding’ professionalism.
“He hasn’t had much game time of late, but the composure, the sharpness. He doesn’t panic,” co-commentator Mills said.
“He comes on last week, scores a goal, and he plays again tonight, scores a goal.
“He looks after himself, keeps himself in good shape. You never hear from him either, he never moans.
“He’s an absolutely brilliant professional.”
