Jack Grealish believes VAR is ruining football after an ’embarrassing’ decision denied Aston Villa a point against West Ham on Monday night.
Another weekend of VAR drama in the Premier League ended in the most fitting way as Ollie Watkins had a last-gasp equaliser controversially ruled out during Villa’s 2-1 defeat at the London Stadium.
It was another one of those ‘armpit offside’ calls, and it followed Mohamed Salah’s toe being given offside during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw at Brighton on Saturday.
Villa captain Grealish, like many top-flight players and managers, has been vocal about his dislike of VAR, and gave another damning assessment on Monday night.
He wrote on Twitter: “As for VAR, I’ve shared my views before and it’s now just getting borderline embarrassing with some off the decisions. Ruining the game.”
He also posted on Instagram, writing: “VAR get rid.”
Meanwhile, Rangers legend and talkSPORT pundit Ally McCoist branded VAR a ‘farce’, insisting that it’s somehow coming to the wrong conclusions.
The Scotsman argues that Angelo Ogbonna was fouling Watkins as he edged a millimetre beyond the last defender, something which was far more ‘clear and obvious’ than the offside itself.
“Do you know what’s the maddening thing? They’re getting it wrong when they’re looking at it,” McCoist argued.
“That last night is either a goal or a penalty. Am I wrong?
“Was it not brought in for clear and obvious? So first and foremost, if there is an obvious error last night, the obvious part is that the referee has missed a penalty. Not that the player’s offside.
“It shouldn’t be getting looked at because it’s not clear and obvious.
“The whole thing’s a farce.”
