Mikel Arteta admits Arsenal will be in ‘big trouble’ if they don’t rectify woeful form after Man City thump Gunners in Carabao Cup

Mikel Arteta has admitted his Arsenal side must turn the corner sooner rather than later or they will be in ‘big trouble’.

Arteta’s men are on a woeful run of form which continued on Tuesday night when they were thumped 4-1 by Manchester City in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

The Spaniard admitted the cup defeat was ‘a really hard one to take’, but maintained he still had faith in the players.

He told Sky Sports: “I see how much they try and what they are trying to do, but at the moment a lot of strange things are happening in every game and that makes things really difficult.

“We have to turn it around, there is no question. If we don’t, we are in big trouble, so that [next run of games] is the moment which is going to decide our season.

“I am focused on the fighters that we have [in the squad], the spirit which we showed tonight again going against a really difficult opponent and the way we tried.”

Arteta accepted his side had made things difficult for themselves following such a slow start.

“At the start we conceded after only two minutes with a really soft goal,” the Arsenal manager added.

“After that moment, we are in a difficult position, but we got back in the game and had a spell for 25 minutes in which we were the better team.

“Then we conceded the second goal the way we did, and after that, they can penalise you and make it difficult.

“We are chasing the game, they break from our counter attack and score from an offside position, and we end up losing the game again.”

Arteta also revealed that the club were ‘looking at options’ for the January transfer window, both in terms of players coming in and going out.

He concluded: “We will see what happens. It is a really complicated window.”
