Remembering when Cristiano Ronaldo lost it at Nani for denying stunning solo effort as icon steals goal from Juventus teammate in Champions League

Cristiano Ronaldo is undoubtedly one of the greatest players of all time – and perhaps one of the most selfish people to play the game.

That is not necessarily meant as a slight towards the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, merely that his appetite for goals is ferocious and always wants to be the player to score.

If the 35-year-old is in a shooting position then his teammate needn’t bother shouting to him to pass.

The Portugal star is also more than happy to steal the last touch when the ball is going in to get on the scoresheet.

He did so on Wednesday night during Juventus’ 3-0 win over Dynamo Kiev when he was on hand to tap in on the goal line when Alvaro Morata’s effort was (probably) going over the line.

Better to be safe than sorry… right? It was also his 750th career goal and probably the least spectacular of his career.

Ronaldo, though, was not best pleased when the situation was reversed in 2010 when his Portugal teammate denied him a magnificent solo goal against then world champions Spain.

In the first half of that game, the forward was one-on-one with Gerard Pique and his chop back left the Barcelona defender for dead.

He then scooped the ball over Iker Casillas and it was looping into the net for a certain goal before Nani came steaming in to get the last touch.

It was all for nothing, however, with Nani ruled offside and Ronaldo visibly venting his frustrations at his teammate.

When later asked if Ronaldo was angry with him, Nani told the UTD Podcast: “No, I think he was angry with the referee!

“Everyone took it wrong, he was angry with the referee because the ball was already in and they made a bad decision.

“Imagine if the ball was not in and then I took it before. I was not offside, if you see that video.

“But obviously I had no intention to take the goal from him. I told him ‘Sorry’ in that moment because it was a beautiful goal.

“And for me that goal still exists, you just need to cut out the part where I touched the ball!

“But thank God he doesn’t need that goal to be who he is and he has so many goals to choose and still enjoy his career, and the fans as well.”

Ronaldo may have been a tiny bit aggrieved at being denied such a spectacular goal, despite Nani’s claims, but let’s be honest he’s had plenty of other highlights and goals to celebrate in his career.
