Trevor Sinclair explains what makes Brendan Rodgers similar to Pep Guardiola

Trevor Sinclair made a stunning claim live on talkSPORT as he likened Brendan Rodgers to Pep Guardiola.

Guardiola is recognised as one of football’s greatest managers, having won 29 trophies in spells in charge of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City.

Rodgers is far less decorated – winning the Championship play-off final at Swansea while also lifting seven trophies with Celtic.

But Sinclair identified one area where the Leicester boss is similar to Guardiola.

He said before the Leicester vs Manchester United live commentary: “If you look at say Pep – I don’t think he’s gone in at Manchester City saying ‘this is what we do’.

“He’s earned that respect, he’s got to know everyone’s name, he’s been polite, he’s done things correctly that you’re supposed to do when you lead a group of people.

“That’s what he’s done at Manchester City and that’s what Brendan’s done here [at Leicester]. He has got a history of success now – at Celtic, at Liverpool, at Swansea.

“He could easily get lazy but that’s his make-up, that’s his DNA that he goes in and puts the hard yards in to earn the respect of the players and once you’ve got the respect of the players they’ll work for you a bit more.”

Rodgers and co. are currently second in the Premier League as they pegged back Manchester United, who had won all their away Premier League matches this term, to earn a 2-2 draw at the King Power Stadium.

After the match, Rodgers told talkSPORT: “I thought the mentality of the team was strong throughout, I thought we played a really, really good game against a top side.

“But I think it also showed the level that we’re at. We’re very competitive against a very good side.

“They got a bit of luck with the first goal but we came back and scored an excellent goal with Harvey Barnes and likewise in the second half. It shows we’re developing mentality as a team at the very highest level.

“There’s a lot of growth left to this team – we lost twice to Manchester United last year – but we’ve shown in a lot of big games this season that we’re competitive which is important.

“I’m sure Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] will come away thinking we’re a decent side.”
