Wayne Rooney urges Derby to make a decision on next manager as Rams’ winless run goes on

Wayne Rooney reiterated his desire to become Derby boss on a permanent basis but urged the powers that be to make a decision quickly.

However, his bid to get the job suffered a blow as the Rams failed to win for the eleventh successive match. This one stinging a lot as they conceded a stoppage-time strike to draw 1-1 to Coventry at Pride Park.

Rooney is quickly learning about the hardships of management

It looked as though the interim boss was going to get the three points thanks to a Colin Kazim-Richards header on 83 minutes.

But Gustavo Hamer’s late intervention meant Rooney had to settle for a point again, three days on from the team being held 1-1 by Wycombe in their first game with England and Manchester United’s record goalscorer in sole interim charge.

Derby are now four points adrift of safety while Coventry move up a place to 19th, four clear of the relegation zone.

A disappointing result for Rooney’s Rams but the 35-year-old was in positive mood, insisting that a win will come sooner or later.

But he stressed the importance of making a decision with the likes of John Terry also linked to the job.

Rooney told talkSPORT: “The performance was really good, there was good football. What really pleased me was the game management for large portions of the game. It was a performance that deserved a win.

“[A win] it’s coming, it’s definitely coming. The performance was great and we’ve created chances which we weren’t doing and now we have to go to the next step and put those chances in the net. There’s progress being made.

“I can’t fault the effort of any of the players, they gave me everything and they deserved the win.

Rooney wants the job but believes a decision on who becomes permanent boss should be made soon

On the prospect of being permanent Derby boss, he added: “It’s something I want to do, it’s something I’m confident in. I’ve got belief in myself and the players believe in me and trust in me and what I’m asking them.

“The sooner a decision is made the better because once the new owners are in for this club, to move forward it will be vital to have a decision.”
