Anthony Martial ‘does not even look like he enjoys football’ according to Trevor Sinclair, who watched the Manchester United forward’s ineffectual performance against Sheffield United.
The Blades stunned title-chasing United as substitute Olivier Burke secured Chris Wilder’s rock-bottom side just their second Premier League victory of a wretched season thanks to a 2-1 win.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men were riding the crest of a wave after Sunday’s FA Cup defeat of Liverpool, only to be brought crashing down to earth on a night when many expected them to go back top of the league.
Ex-Manchester City youth prospect Kean Bryan gave the visitors a shock lead that former Blades defender Harry Maguire cancelled out, only for Burke’s heavily-deflected strike to seal the visitors a shock 2-1 win at Old Trafford.
Martial had an effort ruled out for a foul on goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, but he failed to create a single chance for the rest of the game and looked entirely ineffectual.
Former Manchester City and England winger Trevor Sinclair bemoaned the 25-year-old’s performance at Old Trafford and questioned his desire to play football.
“I’m looking at what Anthony Martial has brought to the table,” said Sinclair during talkSPORT’s live commentary of the Old Trafford clash. “Has he tried any take-ons today?
“As a winger or number nine you’ve got to have a go and try and express yourself.
“He doesn’t even look like he enjoys football!”
It was an almost completely non-existent performance from Martial, who scored a hat-trick in the same fixture last season.
Martial, who has just two Premier League goals to his name this season, was defended just last week by talkSPORT Breakfast host Troy Deeney, who suggested the France international is ‘in the top ten strikers of the Premier League’.
Watford captain Deeney said: “Anthony Martial’s character will always be very dramatic – if he’s upset he’s going to show you that he’s upset.
“The guy is an unbelievable talent, you can’t deny that.
“It’s about expectation. Everyone always talks about his £50m price tag, but the guy still delivers.
“He is, in my opinion, in the top ten strikers of the Premier League, he gets into most teams.
“If you offered him now to Leicester, they would take him, if you offered him to Arsenal, they would take him.”
