Avram Grant confirms he has received NO official approach from Chelsea over return to help Frank Lampard

Avram Grant has confirmed he has had NO official approach from Chelsea to return to the club.

Earlier this week, reports suggested Roman Abramovich was considering bringing the Israeli coach back to Stamford Bridge to assist Frank Lampard as he attempts halt to his side’s poor form.

The Blues have lost four of their last six Premier League matches and have slipped to ninth in the table, ten points behind pace-setters Manchester United.

However, Grant, who managed Chelsea on a caretaker basis in 2007/08, has dismissed those claims on social media.

“I read the links in the media connecting me with a return to Chelsea,” he said on Instagram.

“I have so many positive messages from Chelsea fans on Instagram – thank you.

“But I must say I didn’t receive any official approach from the club.

“I can repeat only what I said lately about the situation at Chelsea.

“Be strong and look for solution! What everybody needs now is time.

“It’s good for Frank and I believe that he will do the job well and is good for the club.

“Good luck to everybody.”

Earlier this month, former Blues midfielder Steve Sidwell spoke to talkSPORT about Grant’s managerial spell at Chelsea, which started when he replaced Jose Mourinho in September 2007.

He explained what went on behind the scenes and revealed how it was the players, rather than Grant himself, who ‘drove the dressing room’ as Chelsea reached the 2008 Champions League final.

“I go back to when I was at Chelsea and Jose Mourinho left and Avram Grant took over,” said Sidwell.

Darren Bent says 'Frank Lampard has to go' if Chelsea are beaten by Morecambe in FA Cup third round

“I remember when the players called a meeting. JT called all the players in and said, ‘look, I’ve been with Roman and he’s said that Avram would be taking charge’.

“The lads were pretty shocked as Avram was there as a kind of technical director and go-between between Jose and Abramovich.

“I remember John Terry and the lads saying, ‘right, we need to drive this ourselves as Avram hasn’t got the experience of the top echelons of football in terms of the Premier League. We have, and we’ll drive this’.

“I’m not saying they went against his wishes or anything. He still led the football club and the football team, but the players really drove that dressing room.”
