Brendan Rodgers is a ‘perfect fit’ to replace Frank Lampard at Chelsea and could leave Leicester the same way he quit Celtic

Adrian Durham believes Brendan Rodgers could leave Leicester in the middle of their title charge if Chelsea ask the Foxes boss to replace Frank Lampard.

Rodgers has guided Leicester into contention for the 2020/21 title and his side easily overcame Lampard’s expensive Blues at the King Power on Tuesday night.

The Foxes look like staying at the top end of the table for the long run, but Rodgers’ own plans for the future have been called into question.

While Leicester and Chelsea are heading in markedly different directions, Durham suggests Rodgers could jump ship for Stamford Bridge if offered the job this season.

Rodgers famously left Celtic for Leicester in 2019 when the Scottish giants were on the brink of a historic treble-treble – and there is a feeling the former Liverpool manager wants another crack at the established big six.

Lampard is under immense pressure at Chelsea, with the club languishing in eighth, and Rodgers, a former Blues coach, would surely be among the top candidates for the job should it become vacant.

“I’m looking at Brendan Rodgers, and with him being a coach there before, he looks like a perfect fit,” Durham said on Drive.

“That’s not me trying to get Frank Lampard out of a job, but Brendan Rodgers is a perfect fit for Chelsea.

“When you consider he left Celtic when they were on the brink of a treble-treble, he won’t mind at all.

“If someone says to him, ‘This is the salary we’ll offer you, this is the transfer budget, this is the ambition we’ve got’.

“That’s where Brendan Rodgers wants to be, in among the elite. Will he achieve that at a sustainable level at Leicester? Possibly, but it’s less likely.”

But fellow talkSPORT host Simon Jordan suggests Leicester and Rodgers aren’t going away any time soon.

“I think they can [challenge for the title],” Jordan said.

“I think they’re better than 95 per cent of the teams in the Premier League right now.

“Brendan Rodgers is an outstanding manager who’s learnt his trade at Swansea and Liverpool and Celtic.

“He’s applying all the experience and education that was already a sound base, to a side that nobody gave any credibility to in 2015/16 and there’s a distinct possibility that sections of the media and sections of the football world are falling into the same trap again.

“This is a real challenge; Leicester City are one of the sides that you will have to finish above, categorically.

“If you finish above Leicester, you’ll win the Premier League. But Manchester City are the ones beginning to hit their straps now.”
