Thomas Tuchel will get the best out of Kai Havertz at Chelsea if he continues to play him in the No.10 role.
That is the view of Arsenal legend Paul Merson, who has admitted he ‘feels sorry’ for the German attacker following his tough start to life in west London.
Havertz, who joined the club for a fee of £71miillion from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, has shown glimpses of quality but has struggled on the whole since his move, netting just one goal in 17 Premier League appearances this term.
And Sky Sports pundit Merson is convinced the playmaker will come good in the near future if Tuchel continues to play him in the ‘hole’ behind the striker.
He told Sky Sports: “He’s 21 years old, he’s going to be a good player.
“People can sit down with me and say he ain’t done anything but he will be special. He will be a special player.
“He’s young, he’s come over, his confidence is shot. For me, I think the manager got it right the other night. Keep playing him in the hole.”
Havertz nearly scored the winner in Chelsea’s 0-0 draw with Wolves in midweek and Merson believes once he’s settled in London he will be a fine addition.
“He nearly scored on the last play of the game. If that goes in he walks off the pitch, six foot four,” he added.
“At the moment, he’s 21, he’s just come over to a country in lockdown. Even though he’s 21, he’s still got parents. If he’s having a bad time, you ring up your parents and tell them to come over for a couple of weeks, spend a bit of time with them.
“Or he rings a couple of mates and says, ‘I’ll fly you over, just come over and stay with us’, but that isn’t happening.
“He has a bad game or he’s out the team and he’s just got to go home and sit in an apartment and just stew.
“He’s 21, he’s an absolute kid and I feel sorry for him.”
