Frank Lampard should not expect any preferential treatment from Roman Abramovich and the Chelsea hierarchy, according to Dean Ashton.
Ashton branded the Blues ‘absolutely abysmal’ while on co-commentary for talkSPORT during their 2-0 defeat at Leicester on Tuesday night.
“I think – his body language – it’s almost as if he knows what’s coming,” Ashton said of Lampard.
“Because he knows what Chelsea’s like, he’s been a part of the club, he knows how ruthless Roman Abramovich can be.
“And rightly so, because he spends an incredible amount of money on players and he has done, he’s backed Frank Lampard with the signings.
“He’ll know that if things don’t improve very, very quickly that he won’t be— there’s not gonna be ‘mate’s rates’ as such for Frank Lampard, he’ll be out, simple as that.”
Wilfred Ndidi fired Leicester ahead after just six minutes.
James Maddison made it 2-0 to the hosts four minutes before the break.
Chelsea were uninspiring throughout and created few chances in the second half despite badly needing them.
Leicester had multiple opportunities to add to their tally, but the game ultimately ended 2-0 meaning that Chelsea are down in eighth after 19 games.
Regarding the performance itself, Ashton added: “They were abysmal. I just thought they were absolutely abysmal.
“Lost for ideas, no real urgency, no massive desire to the players to win the ball back or be there first or try something, get the ball wide.
“There was just nothing. No real sort of unity.
“I couldn’t pick out two players where I thought, ‘Yeah, there’s a great understanding between them two, I can see how that’s gonna work.’
“So many misplaced passes or the wrong run with the wrong pass.
“Really, really worrying performance from a Chelsea point of view.”
