Frank Lampard’s credentials questioned again after Chelsea manager’s spiky press conference – ‘He’s not a player anymore, he’s a manager’

Tony Cascarino has once again questioned Frank Lampard’s managerial credentials after the Chelsea boss hit back at his critics in a spiky press conference on Friday.

Lampard is under immense pressure at Stamford Bridge following a run of five defeats in his last eight league matches, which has sent the Blues from title contention to eighth place in the Premier League.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s FA Cup fourth round clash with Championship side Luton, Lampard singled out a journalist who has reported that the Blues were considering managerial alternatives after the 3-1 defeat at home to Manchester City at the beginning of January.

The reporter asked about how director of football Petr Cech helps with players’ confidence, to which Lampard responded: “To be fair, I think their confidence would be shot if they read some of the pieces you write at the minute.

“I read some of them and some of the confirmation bias that you reflect on games with is like a social media pundit, trying to get a reaction in a negative way.

“I read the pieces when we were doing well, too, and they didn’t go both ways. For a journalist to be objective would be a big start.”

talkSPORT pundits have also questioned whether Lampard is the right man for the job, with Cascarino one of the biggest critics.

And speaking on Weekend Sports Breakfast, the ex-Chelsea forward claimed Lampard needs to stay quiet amid a poor run of form and let his management do the talking.

He explained: “He was a winner as a football player. He won everything. But he’s not a football player anymore, he’s a manager.

“A manager of a group of players, a squad of players that he has to get the best out of.

“The goalkeeper should have been changed… that was probably the right decision as Kepa was playing really poorly.

“The whole back four has changed – numerous centre-halves have played at Chelsea.

“There’s been changes in midfield. There’s been changed upfront.

“If that’s all you’ve got is changes, then that’s not great management.

“Great management is finding formations and personnel to get results in a particular game.”
