‘Mikel Arteta has inherited a mess’ – It’ll take Arsenal boss THREE SEASONS to get Gunners back into Premier League’s top four

Mikel Arteta is facing a huge job to ‘reshape’ his Arsenal team, believes talkSPORT host Jason Cundy, who claims it will be THREE SEASONS until the Gunners are an established top-four side again.

Arsenal have enjoyed a recent revival, winning four of their last five games in all competitions after being tipped for a relegation battle only a few weeks ago.

Arsenal’s recent run ended on Thursday night as Arteta’s side were held in a stale 0-0 draw by a stubborn and Crystal Palace team.

It was a disappointing home display from the north Londoners, who struggled in attack and only mustered two clear-cut chances.

And Cundy believes the performance and result shows just how tough a job Arteta has on his hands to get this Arsenal team back fighting at the top of the Premier League.

Speaking after the match, The Sports Bar host said: “Arteta has inherited a bit of a mess really.

“What you’ve seen from the likes of Emile Smith Rowe, Bukayo Saka and one or two of the other younger players, with their energy, you’ve seen them add something to Arsenal.

“But what we saw tonight will highlight and underline how big a job it is for Arteta to move some of the deadwood, and there is plenty of it that needs to be moved, and reshape the squad.

“He’s just got to get through this season as best he can. What can Arteta really achieve this season?

Simon Jordan says he'll be glad to see Mesut Ozil go to Fenerbahce with Arsenal midfielder finally set to move away from London

“I know they won the FA Cup last year, and you’ll always take a piece of silverware…

“But his job will be to build this squad around this nucleus of young players and move the club forward in that direction.

“I think that is probably going to take at least two or three seasons, to get them where they really feel they should be, which is competing up at that top four.”
