Pep Guardiola hails ‘magic’ Man City for reaching fourth straight Carabao Cup final after defeating Manchester United

Pep Guardiola was left ‘incredibly satisfied’ with his Manchester City team after beating Manchester United 2-0 to proceed to their fourth straight Carabao Cup final.

Unlikely goalscorers John Stones and Fernandinho secured City’s place at Wembley as United lost their fourth consecutive semi-final.

Pep Guardiola’s men have not tasted defeat in this competition since 2016 and will face Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham in the final on April 25 after edging past their neighbours at an empty Old Trafford.

Rejuvenated Stones’ first City goal since November 2017 and Fernandinho’s first since October 2018 gave the Carabao Cup kings a 2-0 victory at United, who lost a fourth straight semi as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s wait for a maiden trophy in charge continued.

This encounter was far more entertaining than last month’s drab goalless derby draw, with Bruno Fernandes denied by a superb Zack Steffen stop and Kevin De Bruyne hitting the post after each side saw a goal ruled out for offside.

Despite United posing a threat on the counter, City had 68% possession in the first half and looked back to their swashbuckling best at the Theatre of Dreams as they continued their strong run of form in all competitions.

The former Premier League champions defeated Chelsea 3-1 on Sunday and, after yet another strong performance away from home, Guardiola could not hide his happiness.

“I’m really impressed about the quality of the human beings in this team,” he told talkSPORT’s Sam Matterface.

“So coming here to Old Trafford and playing the way that we play, we spoke about how we had to play. I’m not talking about winning or losing, we have to play and we played.

“I’m incredibly satisfied in the performance for the way that we showed, again, in our last three games – Newcastle, Chelsea and today – show the quality that we have.”

With yet another visit to the Home of Football secured for the spring, the Spaniard has admitted it feels ‘magic’ to be visiting the home of English football once again.

He continued: “The target is to try to be consistent, so in the last period we were.

“Of course we dropped some points that we shouldn’t have dropped because were not at the same level. But I had the feeling today that we found a special way that we can play good.

“We created problems for the opponent, be consistent, be solid and it’s magic for us. Four times in a row, to go to play at Wembley, to play in this final.”
