Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang got ‘ridiculous contract’ from Arsenal and could become ‘Mesut Ozil 2.0’, says Tony Cascarino

Tony Cascarino fears Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is turning into ‘Mesut Ozil 2.0’ at Arsenal.

The Gabon international signed a huge new contract with the Gunners at the start of the season which saw his salary increase to around £350,000-a-week.

But his form has dropped off a cliff since then, with just three Premier League goals scored all season and a diminishing influence on the Gunners’ performances.

He scored 22 goals in each of his past two Premier League campaigns, and unless he quickly turns things around in north London it is unlikely Aubameyang will come close to that figure this term.

And former Chelsea striker Cascarino feels Auba could be heading the same way as Ozil.

The playmaker fell out of favour under Unai Emery and Mikel Arteta and has not made a competitive appearance since last March.

Arsenal have been trying to offload him since last summer, but have struggleddue to his huge £350,000-a-week contract.

However, it now appears Ozil will finally leave the Gunners in January as talkSPORT understands he will join Fenerbahce after agreeing a seven-figure payoff.

Comparing Aubameyang to Ozil, Cascarino told talkSPORT’s Weekend Sports Breakfast: “I feel really awkward about Arsenal and talking about Aubameyang because I’m talking about a guy with an incredible goalscoring record.

“But he hasn’t had (a good) one this year and I’m feeling like it’s Ozil 2.0.

“They’ve given him this ridiculous contract that’s so big, even though we all might go, ‘it should have been done, he’s been brilliant, he’s played such a high level of football that he’s got to be given the crown jewels’.

“But I’m not convinced Arsenal will keep going down this road of paying these players a wage that is way above other players at the football club.

“They’ve overpaid players who have been playing well, and even players that have played well at other clubs are coming in and upping their wage structure to a real division.

“I can see some players getting huge money and at the lower end being quite a long way apart.

“I think that is going to be an issue that he will have to adjust. There’s definitely problems for Arsenal that you can see have to be resolved.”
